PostSubject: The Ashes: Australia vs England - 3rd Test   Wed Dec 15, 2010 6:30 am

Australia v England
3rd Test @ The WACA
December 16 - December 20

The Big Picture

All both teams want for Christmas is a win, but Australia would settle for a draw as a way of stopping the damage from an opponent showing few weaknesses. England lead the five-match contest 1-0 and will retain the Ashes with a victory, which is the most likely result on the form of the opening two encounters. England have never secured the urn before Christmas in their 133-year history of visits Down Under, and they may never have a better chance.

The series is only 10 days old but already it has taken a toll on both sides. Stuart Broad has been ruled out with a stomach tear and will spend his week in the Test Match Special commentary box instead of the dressing room. Simon Katich's heel problem has forced him out of the side and Australia have called for the type of wholesale changes England teams were mocked for making between 1989 and 2002-03. It's young talent time for the hosts, with Steven Smith (21), Phillip Hughes (22) and Michael Beer (26) coming in, and Mitchell Johnson in favour again after a week spent in the WACA nets.

Apart from which fast bowler to pick to replace Broad, England's main worry is their recent history of giving away hard-won series leads. They allowed Australia to level the 2009 Ashes after four games - but recovered to take the trophy - and also drew in South Africa after earning an early advantage. Australia are praying for more generosity this time.

Team News

Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Steven Smith, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Michael Beer, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus.

England (probable): 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 James Anderson, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 Steven Finn.

Pitch and Conditions

Perth is always talked up as a fast man's favourite but over the past decade it has disappointed. Every year there is excited chatter from the locals that this time it will recapture its past glories. Maybe it will really happen this time. The pitch is expected to start with a tinge of green, but the cracking late in the match is expected to be a far greater concern to the batsmen than early seam movement. Sunny conditions are forecast throughout the game, with maximum temperatures above 30C.

sorry carlton, but ryan harris is probably as good if not a little weaker than johnson battingwise, but much better than beer.

LOL... you do realise he just copied and pasted it from cricinfo...

As long as Ian Bell isn't robbed of another ton i'll be happy Very Happy Seriously he's in the form of his life and hasn't been able to cash in on it Sad.

I might dig up every post you mention Bell being in the form of his life Svoey. Reckon you might lose half your post count if they got deleted Twisted Evil

Yeh from all reports Beer is a spud with the bat too, but i dont think Harris' king pair did him the world of good with batting faith from the selctors. Id still expect him to be at 9 though.

Im really looking forward to Hughes and Smith playing. These guys are the future, and im excited to see if they can inject some new life into the Aussie team though. Probably not though.

Lol who cares... Beer to score a century and take ten for the match. BTW I think you'll find it's off Cricinfo.

Anyway I know England have been awesome with the bat thus far, but I still don't think the gap between the two sides is as much as some people are suggesting. Only time will tell how the Aussies perform, but if we do the basics well I think we could surprise a few people. The changes of Hughes and Smith are positive ones, both will bring plenty of energy to the side and if Beer gets a run (which is likely) good luck to the bloke.

C'mon Aussies!!

It's Ian Bell, It's worth it Twisted Evil However those 50 posts left over would be quality Very Happy

Hopefully Tremlett gets the new ball, his height and pace will be a tough combo for Hughes to cope with. Will be an interesting battle.

The news concerning the Aussie bowling attack is a 4 prong-pace attack with Beer carrying the drinks.

Won't get to watch all of it today as I am going to a mates place but will try and catch a lot of it.

I thought that Beer would be carrying the drinks, as it is the WACA.

Might as well just hand over the urn now. Ponting needs to go, Clarke needs to go. Massive massive changes will be needed if Australia lose.

I'm surprised Beer isn't playing for a couple of reasons.

1. Australia already had 4 seamers in their team, now they're playing 5. Judging by some sheild results at Perth this year spinners have been taking bags of wickets in the 3rd/4th innings. Is Steve Smith going to be able to bowl to the win in the second innings? I highly doubt it... Credit to him if he does.

2. The over rate, with 5 seamers as your 5 front line bowlers you are going to be way behind to over rate come the 3rd session of the day. Australia really needs someone to bowl quick overs to prevent this. I fear come late in the day Clarke and Smith will have to do alot of bowling.

3. They picked him for his "local knowlage" 1 would assume he won't be in the team on boxing day.

Midge has started his innings well, hope he can at least get to 50. Currently on 16 and we're on 6/163.

Once again Hussey and Haddin save Australia's arses Laughing.

Could be a very long couple of days in the field for Australia can't get a couple of wickets with the new ball. The pitch looks very flat considering Australia's put on 200 for their last 5 wickets.
