Australia v England
1st ODI @ MCG

Team News:

Is this a World Cup shoot-out? The selectors want to have a look at a few players before naming their final squad but they won't learn much from one match. Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle have been rested, while Nathan Hauritz was never set to play this match according to Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors. It might mean that Hauritz, who remains in Sydney for now, has already earned his World Cup place and the selectors want to have another look at Xavier Doherty.

Australia: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Michael Clarke, 4 Cameron White, 5 David Hussey, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Steven Smith, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Xavier Doherty, 10 Doug Bollinger, 11 Shaun Tait.

England know their best one-day team, but in the absence of James Anderson (rested) and Stuart Broad (injury) there will be a chance for a combination of Ajmal Shahzad, Chris Woakes and Chris Tremlett to enhance their claims. Andrew Strauss will be back to open and lead the side after his Twenty20 break and has been one England's most consistent one-day batsman recently. The in-form Ian Bell could slot in at No. 3 meaning Kevin Pietersen at four.

England (probable): 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Steven Davies (wk), 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Michael Yardy, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Chris Woakes, 11 Ajmal Shahzad.

All comes down to the Aussies bowling attack. You know what you're going to get from the English, good lines and length and putting pressure on the Aussie batsmen. If our bowlers fire then we should be alright. But Tait can give away runs easily and he needs to bowl well if we want any hope of winning.

i can see are bowlers getting obliterated. Tait is a hack. Lee is well past it. Xavier Doherty isnt anything special, and Dougy could be an X factor, but it could also go very wrong

Yeah good point. I think we're gonna struggle to get more than 7 wickets at least.

But I think you're underrating Xavier Doherty a bit. He is a quality limited overs bowler, very economical.

Really looking forward to the match today, I'm going Very Happy I really hope Dave Hussey can put in a good performance to his home crowd.

Stop the tait bashing. The ways he's bowling now it's taking his t20 talent off and giving it to odi almost, done a lee and has sacrificed pace for control (or at least more control) reckon he'll do well today. what's better, the 2/5 chance tait'll get 4/40, & 3/5 chance he'll get 0/68 or having pretty much every other bowler in the country who's either just a great fc bowler but just not good enough to make the jump (george, swan, copeland, hogan, duffield etc.) or too raw, needs a few years (hazlewood, hastings, starc, pattinson) get 1/55

Seriously if Tait is missing this game because of "back soreness" after bowling 8 overs in 5 days he should kiss his WC spot goodbye.

Pritty piss poor battting for England, they should've ended up with 350 after the start they had. Bell, Davis and Trott all played average shots.

Still, can't see Australia winnings.

Is Watson the most talented cricketer in the world in all forms?

Seriously the guy seems to be taking it to another level with bat and ball, no matter what form.

I dont think there is many people at the moment that are so conistent over all three forms.

This.

At some times, Australia would be absolutely screwed without him.

Too bad he's not a true test opening batsman.

then you'd say sehwag isn't a true test opening batsman as he bats untechnically, but he's one of the greats. technique and aesthetics isn't everything, if he averages 45 (which he has since opening) then it's good enough.

Serious question - Whats Sehwags stats outside of india? Indian pitches have been roads over the past couple of years.

Sehwag did nothing on their recent tour of South Africa.

Watsons technique is near perfect. You cant consider Katich a 'true' opening batsmen either, as he spent most of his career away from the top 2, much like Watson. I think if you look through all test openers in all countries, you will find a lot aren't 'true' test batsmen. Whatever that criteria may be.

Okayish. His record in SA sucks, yes.

Re: Watson ... Geezus, Australia really don't travel around much. He only has stats in Australia, England, New Zealand and India. That's less than half the current test countries.

Aside from forgetting South Africa, it's still a point to be made that Watson doesn't have much outside of Australia.

Unlucky to see Clarke go out, but it wasn't a horrible innings. Played a few good shots and was there for Watson.

Now Smith neefds to do the same, but hit the ball around a lot as well.

Just as I say this he goes out...Very unlucky.
