Can Adam Parore handle a hit from Frank Bunce? Could Dion Nash tackle Peter Fatialofa? Those sorts of questions will be answered when sport stars and celebrities don rugby boots for a Samoa tsunami charity game at Eden Park on Sunday.

A Samoan side will play an American Samoa team as the curtainraiser to the Air New Zealand Cup match between Auckland and Counties-Manukau.

Announced in the wake of the tsunami that destroyed large parts of the coastline in both Samoa and America Samoa and killed more than 150 people, the teams are now taking shape.

The lineups will include former Black Caps cricketers Parore, Nash, and Murphy Sua.

League stars Stacey Jones, Awen Guttenbeil, Tea Ropati and Monty Betham are keen for a crack at the 15-man game.

And plenty of former All Blacks are coming out of the woodwork – Jeff Wilson, Craig Dowd, Eric Rush, Ron Cribb, Josh Kronfeld, Ben Atiga, Charles Riechelmann, Craig Innes, Pat Lam, Shane Howarth, Christian Cullen, Adrian Cashmore, Ant Strachan and Bunce.

Fatialofa, the rugged face of Samoan rugby, will anchor the blue scrum. He joked that with the lack of TV presence and a citing commissioner this might be the ideal game to bring back rucking.

TV presenter Neil Waka will also play.

The match will be over two 20 minute halves. Golden Oldies scrums will be employed but the game will feature full tackling.

Organised by former Auckland player Martin Stanley and Lam, the Blues coach who played for both Samoa and the All Blacks, there has been no shortage of high-profile people wanting to play.

"Originally we thought it might be good to just do it within the Auckland Samoan community because there are so many rugby players. But it quickly became clear so many other people wanted to help," said Stanley.

"Everyone has come out for the cause and are really keen to put their bodies on the line for us and do what we can to help the people back in Samoa," added Lam.

And he anticipates some very sore bodies, judging by his own experiences. The 41–year-old Lam is fit and in good shape but he hasn't played contact rugby for two years

"Two years ago I had to play a game for the Parliamentary team and it took me two weeks to recover. I said I'd never do it again but for this cause you have to."

The tsunami game kicks off at 1.15pm with the Auckland v Counties-Manukau match played at 2.35pm

Would love it if this was televised, would love to see Wilson and Cullen at it again. and wouldn't mind seeing Adam Parore get smashed. What a shame its golden oldies would love to see Peter Fatialofa and Craig Dowd pack down a proper scrum.

In the Tsunami Charity curtainraiser the rugby league stars were threatening to steal the show with Stacey Jones (two), Tea Ropati and Awen Guttenbeil all amongst the tries. But former All Blacks Pat Lam and Jeff Wilson scored late tries as Western Samoa rallied to beat Samoa 35-25.
