Rugby's landscape could change significantly if the IRB approves new eligibility rules that would allow former internationals to play for a second country.

The IRB will vote on the on the motion in Dublin tonight and it could have major ramifications to the World Cup and particularly New Zealand and Pacific islands nations.

The IRB is being asked to consider allowing players to move into another national team after a 12-month stand down period.

I'm torn - one the one hand it can grant a relative lifeline to players like Isa Nacewa, Casey Laulala and Soseni Anesi who, under current rules, are effectively barred from International Rugby due to very small test careers with the ABs; and also help prop up the smaller nations, especially PI ones...

But on the other hand, the NH exodus of players could get even worse if they suddenly had the chance to not only play club rugby up there, but also test rugby...

that would be great for the P.I. teams, they could snatch a few NZ rugby players who can't make it in the ABs any more. Joe Rok could be lining up for Fiji next WC!!

This is good news for PI nations, could this mean that both Rok and Sivivatu could possibly be playing for Fiji at the WC?

Yea well I cant see Joe being back in black with how good Corey Jane and Zac Guildford have been. However I think Sivi will still be an All Black in 2011.

I think its a great idea.

When you consider how much NZ rugby (and to a lesser extent Australia) has benefited from our relationship with the islands, I think something like this to benefit their local game is long, long overdue.

Really hope the NZRU pushes hard for this one

It was the other way for Nacewa, 5 mins for Fiji off the bench cost him a shot at the All Blacks

Isa Nacewa was never good enough for an All Blacks jersey anyway.

I disagree, Donald was a better at Super 14 level, he just sucks when it comes to test matches.

True. But with the flaky Blues you never really know, Isa might've been a super star with some decent players around him.... lol

Agree he may not have quite been of starter quality but he was equally adept at 10, 12 and 15 so would've made a very handy bench man.

Agreed re: Nacewa.

In what is a blow for a host of former All Blacks with Pacific Island backgrounds, the proposal to change regulation eight was rejected by the International Rugby Board council in Dublin yesterday.

Knocked back anyway so red-herring.

Thats just typical of the short sightedness of the IRB.

All their talk about assisting the smaller rugby nations and they bounce something that could help no end and at minimal cost as well?

I guess the only "small rugby nations" they are interested in are the ones with billion dollar economies and 100k seat stadiums they can bludge off
