The Best Young Fullback Talent? Dugan or Locke Empty
PostSubject: The Best Young Fullback Talent? Dugan or Locke   The Best Young Fullback Talent? Dugan or Locke Icon_minitimeThu Jan 14, 2010 2:21 pm

I am in a argument with a bloke on another forum, He believes Locke is the better player out of him and Josh Dugan.

I pretty much scoffed at this. Josh Dugan is the best young talent I've seen in several years.

His defence is already at Veterans status. Only one person had a better average amount of tackle breaks per game and that was none other than Jarryd Hayne.

Dugan also is by far the best kick-returner in the competition.

Only thing I see with Locke is he has more of an attacking instinct with the ball in hand in the opponents 20.

I see Dugan a similar player to Kurt Gidley, Imo he may already be better than Kurt though and he has all the time in the world to develop an attacking game.

Thoughts?

Both seem great to me and I cant really split them at this stage seeing as Locke has played all his first grade on the wing so far so you cant really compare there stats.

Locke is better I reckon.
Mainly due to the fact you compared him to Gidley who is a shithouse fullback.

Locke has impressed so far but has only played first grade on the wing wait until he starts playing fullback. This kid uesd to get huge crowds when he was playing stuff like u16s and u18s and would score a length of the field try every week which is why people kept going back.

I choose dugan defensively because when locke played against the titans which the warriors lost 30-10 and locke's defence was rubbish and when canberra beat brissy 56-0 dugan was easily the best man on field

Like someone said above, its hard to compare given that Locke has played all his games on the wing and none at fullback.

Would Dugan be as good on the wing? Doubt it.

2011 will be the year to compare the 2, if McKinnon doesnt perform we could see him move on and Locke move to fullback.

WRONG!.

Played one game there because he was coming back from Injury.

Scored a try, made a line-break, 9 tackle breaks, 17 runs for 187 metres, and also pretty good defensively

Dugan owns Locke

Because 1 game makes a player ae mate?

Those are good stats though, i give him that. Link? Or did you memorise those stats?

Wait till 2011 when both players are starting fullbacks then it would be much easier to compare the 2.

New man crush, eh Deucey?

It is pretty hard to split the two at the momeont though, seeing as Locke hasn't been playing in his preferred position at fullback which by the sounds of it he was pretty gun in that position in first grade and during his younger years. Hopefully he is given a few matches at fullback this season, but for now you can't really judge who is the better fullback but they are both very exciting young prospects.

Locke is a star player. Locke is a better goal kicker, has more speed and a better tackling game on him let alone he can definitely finish. Both a quality players but Locke is a better one at that, in 08 when both were playing NYC Locke had better stats and i am pretty sure he was top tryscorer and goal kicker.

Locke is more versitle, even though DD you would argue this by saying Dugan has played on the wing 1 game.

Locke has made the World Champion New Zealand side at only 19 and that says a lot

PostSubject: Re: The Best Young Fullback Talent? Dugan or Locke   The Best Young Fullback Talent? Dugan or Locke Icon_minitimeSat Jan 16, 2010 5:16 am

Jump Yard Dog,

Have another closer look at the 2008 Toyota Cup stats. Locke played 24 games, Dugan played 19 games, where both scored 15 tries. Locke finished the year with 22 line breaks, 6 line-break assists, and 7 try assists, Dugan finished wit 19 line-breaks, 6 line-break assists and 7 try assists.

Dugan clearly finished with a higher total of tackle breaks despite being five games down, also clearly made more metres.

It is safe to say in the 5 games down that Dugan has disadvantaged, he would of achieve 3 stat points in either of the LB, LBA or TA categorys based on the rate that both players achieved at.

Kevin Locke is also one year older then Dugan, So theoretically Locke should of been a much of dominant player in 2008 as he would of been a much more mature footballer, when it's arguably Dugan eclipsed Locke in 2008 as well as 2009 in Toyota Cup.

Josh Dugan has also been easily the better progresser in the transition from Toyota Cup to First Grade.

and also take a glance at both players 2009 Toyota Cup stats.

Both players played 6 games, Dugan scored 9 tries in those 6 games, made 7 line-breaks, 5 line-break assists and 6 try assists, also making 69 tackle breaks in the process, which is an average of more then 10 a game, also averaged 200 metres on the dot.

Locke only scored 3 tries in those 6 games, and made 2 line-breaks, 3 line-break assists and 2 try assists, made only 34 tackle breaks compared to Dugan's 69 and only averaged 107.5 metres compared to Dugan's 200.

Now to this year, where Dugan easily outplayed Kevin Locke

Games:
Josh Dugan 16
Locke 12

Tries:
Locke 4
Dugan 1

Line Breaks:
Dugan 9
Locke 5

Line Break Assists:
Dugan 2
Locke 1

Try Assists:
Dugan 4
Locke 0

Tackle Breaks:
Dugan 110
Locke 42

Metres:
Dugan 191.8
Locke 104.8

Tackles:
Locke 8.2
Dugan 4.9

Missed:
Locke 2.3
Dugan 0.9

Ineffective:
Locke 1.2
Dugan 0.5
--------------------------------------------
Now it seems really clear to me who is the better player and who has "Always" been the better player.

Just some notes in those stats, I don't feel Locke playing on the Wing and Dugan playing at fullback makes alot of difference.

Dugan played once on the wing, and stayed consistent with his match statistics, made 9 tackle-breaks and 187 metres total, Locke played one game at fullback, made 4 tackle-breaks and 163 metres, Dugan's game on the Wing was more impressive then Locke's solo game at fullback.

In the four less games Locke played, There is no chance he could of made up 58 tackle breaks in four games, especially when he averages a bit under 4 a game and Dugan averages close to 7.

Dugan had outstanding kick-return results this year with 281,266,223 and 225 metres per game, all four of those he averaged more then 10 metres a run.

Josh Dugan has already shown his defence is veteran status in the NRL, as he took down David Taylor within 10 metres of the line, comparing Dugan's frame and Taylor's frame this is a fair achievement.

Going into 2010, Locke has not gained a single kg. while Dugan has gained 4kg.

Locke was average at best in his 2nd year of Toyota Cup, I really have no idea how the Warriors could of promoted him based on his 2009 form in NYC.

People rate him so highly because he has the potential to be a spitting image to Billy Slater with how he plays the game and how he can just chime into the backline.

Even in Toyota Cup playing at fullback this year, He was nothing special at all. Do you really think he could of turned your form around from average in NYC to consistent/impressive in the NRL?.

Josh Dugan is a similar player to Kurt Gidley, however Dugan is much more dangerous on kick-returns and the ball in hand, you can tell by the number of tackle breaks he produces every game, makes a bit shy of 200 metres a game which means he gives all the field position in the world to his halves.

It's ridiculous to rate Locke over Dugan based on what Locke's game could potentially be like to Dugan's comparison to Kurt Gidley.

Simply Dugan has handled first grade alot more soundly, Just because Dugan is similar to Gidley in their games, doesn't mean Dugan will never be a threat in the attacking 20.

If Dugan can improve his support play in attack, and really chime into the backline and set plays, Dugan will be a phenomenal player in 2010.

Yeah DD you are forcing on your opinion. Just shut up. Second of all, Locke was injured for a majority of 2009 so how can u say he was average?

Dugan is behind a pretty poor Canberra backline so his is always going to shine out and that is the opposite with Locke and the Warriors. You have more ball in your hands as a fullback than a wing!

Your inaccurate about ages, Locke is the younger player.

Definitely Dugan over Locke, he was so impressive last season and cemented the fullback spot as his own. Locke was also impressive, but i really think Dugan is going to be a star, not saying Locke wont be though. I remember that game when the rampaging Dave Taylor absolutely smashed Dugan, the expression on his face told it all. His face looked like it had been hit by a sledgehammer. I think i was watching this because the outcome decided if the Titans were going to play Brisbane or not in the first week of the finals.
