Personal Security?? Empty
PostSubject: Personal Security??   Personal Security?? Icon_minitimeSat Jan 23, 2010 6:20 am

Being the computer n00b my dad is, he somehow came across this "personal security" download which came up stating that "the computer he is using is at risk and to help protect the files it is recommended to download this personal security anti-spyware software" or something along the lines of that.

anyway he did download it to his laptop and it turns out that this personal security "anti-spyware" software is some sort of misleading application that displays fake security alerts/pop ups and reports false system security threats/infections to scare you into thinking that your computer is infected with malicious software and asks you to pay for a full version in order to remove non-exisiting infections.. weirdly enough the program blocks real security software to protect itslef from being deleted/uninstalled and it also hijacks your internet explorer and blocks most of the sites you try go into.

anyway on my dads laptop ive looked on quite a few sites which provide softwares which help in removing personal security and have tried downloading about three softwares which are meant to get rid of the personal security program but becuase of the fact that this program is able to protect itself from being deleted i am unable to open/use any of the personal security remover applications..

the best option at the moment would be to take the laptop to a computer specialist shop and let a proffesional try get rid of it.

But i'm interested to know if anyone else has come across this "personal security" scam..

I got some rubbish on my computer the other day, it said it was a virus removal program or something and i didnt even download it or anything it just appeared on my computer oneday.. I downloaded a program called malware i think it is and that got rid of all the crap.. For some reason AVG wasnt working when that virus was on my computer.

yeah that would most likely be the same software that my dad came across.. weirdly enough the program blocks real security software to protect itslef from being deleted/uninstalled so that explains why your AVG wasnt working.

I just use Spyware and Adware, coupled with Norton & some other shit. Why don't you just find the source file of the "virus" and right click/delete. simple

Yeah malwarebytes is good - and there's an awesome support forum network on their website to help ensure that everything is sorted out too - I followed a thread there and they're pretty awesome.

You can also try spybot which is simple and effective - again, you'll probably have to download it on another PC and then tranfer via memory stick.

Finally - Trend Micro HouseCall is really handy for a full virus scan of your PC without being installed on your system - a number of times my local AV found nothing while TMHC found half a dozen infected files.

The exact same thing happened to me a month ago. I just bought a new computer because the other one was so fucked it wouldn't let me install a new anti virus program

Can get them rebuilt with a blank image of windows easily enough if you have the disk - just have to backup your personal documents and stuff first. Of course if the machine is crap and you can afford to buy a new one anyway - just think of it as an upgrade Smile

Unfortunately the way Mac works is that heaps of shit don't work on it, so you need an operating system that works on normal comps. I went through a phase of using linux, but, when I changed comps just haven't reverted back, though I should.

The only things that don't work on a Mac that work on a PC are computer games, but you can still with a bit of skill make them work.

Yeah that's what I got as well Becks, got it on Christmas day.

It came on pretenting that the computer had a virus, when really, the program itself was the virus. Took a computer technician three different programs to delete it, but he did use Malwarebytes or whatever so yeah.

It seems viruses a more common around the Christmas and New Year for some reason.

I can't help too much, i just use Symantec Endpoint Protection, works fine. I have had viruses in the past but my dad's mate is a computer expert so he fixes it for free.
