7 and 8 are all sewn up with McCaw and So'oialo respectively. 6 is wide open with Kaino, Read, Messam and Thomson all top contenders for the spot.

Unfortunately Waldrom suffers from being a specialist 7 and, as backup to McCaw, will never get game time barring injury or a ridiculously easy match where they can afford to sub McCaw.

Kaino and Read can both play 6 and 8 well
Thomson can play 6 and 7 well (no rubbish about him playing 8)
While Messam can feasibly play all three loose forward positions.

Yeah, Waldrom is currently the backup 7 front-runner. Though Josh Blackie will have something to say about that methinks Smile

I don't see Read as a 7 EVER. Just like So'oialo, he doesn't belong there. 7 is not the position for a "workaholic" like those two.

IMO you need 3 roles filled with your loosies - a fetcher, a bouncer, and a worker.

For the last couple of years we've had that perfectly with McCaw, Collins and So'oialo respectively. This year the Chiefs and Crusaders had the trio right as well, though both suffered from sub-quality No. 8's who couldn't control the scrums properly (Tuiali'i's main failing). This year the mission has been finding a proper replacement for JC, and we haven't done that yet. Kaino is the most "bouncer" like of all the contenders which gives him the front-running going into the Super comp.

There is no chance that Waldrom will get the number 7 jersey while ritchie mccaw is there. He is a great player especially as he has a tonne of speed and isnt even in the backine. Could he moved to 6?

I said loudly that the Canes should've kept Lilo, and played Waldrom at 6 - damn that would've been brutal.

That Serge Lilo? He at wiakato?

Is Waldrom played at 6 that would give him a big chance of being a starter for ab's

Serge Lilo is Wellington, but was drafted to the Chiefs for '09 cause the Canes didn't take him - Cooper said that since Waldrom was the incumbent backup 7 now Lilo wouldn't get any game time. with the Chiefs he could feasibly challenge Latimer for the starting spot.

Waldrom at 6 could be lethal - will never happen though; unless Cooper gives Karl Lowe a go which wouldn't be a bad idea.

sorry dont rate scot waldrom as a 7. good 6 and has stamina and speed, but doesnt have that openside instinct. serge has it but he's a bit small. braid had it when he first made the ABs but then got injured and has never made it back. my moneys on joshBlackie to be the ABs backup 7. shame nili latu played for tonga cos he's got the goods

thomson is in the picture for 6 but have to say that reid has been performing better, though i'd rather have messam as he's an allRound athelete with a big tackle. though both reid and messam would work great in tandem with richie and rodney.

i thought thomson (and kaino) got outmuscled in the games vs SA. would've liked to have seen reid or messam play those games.

anyone else notice that thomson tends to disapear sometimes? tends to hang outsideof the ruck too much waiting for the pass when he should b in there clearing out. reid also does that waiting for the pass instead of going in to contest ruck ball.

Thomson really looked too immature out there - especially against SA. It was like he was trying to do too much and just starting stuffing it up...

id say thompson good out muscled but not Kaino! Kaino is real good, he should cement the spot next year if he has a good season
