From that list i think Ranger, Dagg & Bekhuis will be AB's before the others. Ranger more so than the other 2, his utility value could prove valuable, even for the World Cup.

I dont think there will be many bolters tbh, will only be 1 or 2 debuts this year IMO. A couple others who i think may get a chance are...

Aaron Cruden (Hurricanes)
George Whitelock (Crusaders)
Sona Taumalolo (Chiefs)

At the end of the day, you have to weigh up the performance of the new kid compared to the form of the incumbants and honestly ask, are they performing that much better?

Robbie Fruean - compare to Smith and Kahui? Nah, don't see it
Rene Ranger - compare to Sivi, Jane & Guildford - maybe but unlikely, especially given his legal issues...
Josh Bekhuis - compare to Thorn, Ross, Donnelly & Boric (since Eaton and Williams are out injured) - maybe...unlikely though, they'll want to settle on already tried and tested
Ryan Crotty - Compared to Nonu & McAlister - definite possibility but may well have to wait till 2012
Rene Ranger - so good he had to be mentioned twice huh Rozz?
Israel Dagg - Compared to Muliaina & Jane? Nah - another for 2012.

gotta disagree bout dagg Pantherus

Janes an infinitely better winger than FB. so daggs a better FB than Jane, however he is a specialist FB so that could work against him, but is overdue for an ABs spot. he's got brains and huge cajones.

ranger sux under the high ball so dont like him on the wing, but is perfect in the centres. is he more skilled than kahui or smith?, no. does he have more power and speed yes. i'd chuck him in now tho cos all that speed will only be good for a couple of years before it ebbs and wanes. got real good instinct for the line but needs to work on his vision and mixing up his game instead of crash banging it all the time.

fruen has the physical skills but not convinced he's smart enough yet for the ABs. lots of potential but needs to cut down his error rate. fruen someday maybe but not this year

Imagine a back 3 of 15. Dagg, 14. Jane, 11. Guildford. I like the look of that. I wonder if Dagg was to be chosen they'd take into consideration how well he and Zac work together.

Anyway can't see Dagg making the ABs with Mils still around. As Mania said being a specialist fullback would probably work against him.

I can't see many Forwards being bolters. Props and Hookers are both fully covered. Franks (2) Crockett Woodcock Tialata...Hore Mealamu Flynn Elliot de Malmanche...

Locks, well even with injuries we've still got a lot. I'd wouldn't mind seeing Bekhuis get a shot though.

Loose Forwards, although our stocks aren't as strong as they used to be, no players who haven't been ABs before look good enough to step up.

Halfbacks are also very covered Cowan, Weepu, Mathewson, Leonard and Ellis, all have been ABs before.

Fly Halfs, well Cruden hasn't really impressed so far in the Super 14 but he has been coming off the bench in most, see how he goes for the remainder of the season but I doubt he'll get in.

Centers, I think with Kahui back and Nonu, Conrad, McAlister and Toeava, we're pretty much covered. I wouldn't mind seeing Ranger get a shot though.

Wings/Fullbacks, Guildford, Jane, Mils, Sivi, I wouldn't take Ben Smith again, but Toeava can cover both.

So really only a couple of Bolters for me, that being Ranger and Bekhuis. Cruden is a long shot. I wouldn't be too surprised if Stephen Brett got the call up, I really hope he doesn't.

no not brett. he's a liability on defence. he drifts in the wrong direction then doesnt chase when they take the gap he leaves

like your back 3 hendo but still gotta take some power wingers like hGear for teams that dont bomb it all the time. shame bout mils having mortgage on the 15 and keeping dagg out but yeah the way he links with guildford is sublime to watch.

mealamu is too suspect on his throw ins, demelmanche couldnt hit a barn if he were inside it. flynn, hmph.

franks bros i was suspect about but they've held their own vs the saffa's so they got the goods. tialata needs to stop being stupid. woodcocks the only sure thing in the front row tho

have to say karlLowe should get a shot for the loosies, he can play 6 and 7 and would make a good 8 in a pinch. sooialo's not an 8 anymore. shouldnt have put on all that bulk.

centres i reckon ranger will make it in

wings no to benSmith, definately guildford while he's still got his speed.

I definitely agree with you on Brett, I definitely don't want him in the team, but now he's getting starts and being an ex-cantabrian and new aucklander could definitely help him out. I reckon they'd probably pick him over Cruden, Delaney and maybe even Donald.

Aaron Cruden is not up to international level did you see this guy last night when he came on imo he was dreadful. He should have got the ball and kicked it down field!

yeah cruden is more ideal for 7's. nonu needs to get off his a55 and start straightening up his runs onto the ball

piri needs to learn to pass without straying from the base of the scrum to speed up bax ball

oh the canes game was painful

I videoed most of the Canes game - turned it on in the last 10 minutes...my thought process kind of went like this...
- they need 2 tries in 10 minutes to win it...no way
- huh...that's one, don't think they can do it again...stupid missed conversion...
- wow they managed another...conversion for a draw...yes!
- OK...so try and milk a penalty or at least kick it out to gain the draw...
- NO!!!
- ...yeah...I'm not gonna watch the rest of the game on the video...

Would Mathewson be considered a bolter?

Also I wonder about a bolter trio of Paterson/Lowe/Vito...

Rutledge is almost a certainty for the backup hooker spot - on form he's on par with Hore this season, while no hooker other than Mealamu has been showing any real ability.

did have alby there but thought I'd try get a 15 of players who hadn't been ABs before.

Yea Paterson has been great and it would be handy having him there as he can cover both 6 and lock. Could push for a bench spot which would allow specialist openside to be on the bench as well (Karl Lowe Smile )

Tim Nanai-Williams is the form fullback, unlikely he'll get selected yet though.

Think Toeava is out isn't he?

If he is, I really don't know who I'd put there...

Have heard Donald and Delaney will be fit to go by then. I dont see any other solutions tbh.

If they are fit both should make the team, Donald will slip into #12 and Delaney will sit on the bench. McAlister will probably be amongst it too. I was looking forward to Cruden maybe getting a go?

What is the deal with Kahui? Is he injured?

Kahui should be back in time, but he doesn't deserve a spot. I'd gamble with Smith in 12 and Ranger in 13 Smile
