The Swans already play 2 or 3 matches a season at ANZ. The seats must be removable.

Retractable seating on the wing that they pull in and out depending on which sport is being played.

They'll surely be playing at ANZ Stadium or that ground where Sydney played in the NAB Cup.
They were gonna play at the ground in Blacktown, where Sydney played in the NAB Cup, however they're looking at possibly changing their home ground to Sydney Showground which is an oval ground in Homebush near ANZ Stadium. Personally I think they should stick with Blacktown seeing as the AFL have pumped money into it to build facilities, rather than just wasting money. And playing at ANZ would be stupid, it holds 80k, they wouldn't even get half of that, atmosphere would be terrible. Swans can get away with it because they're a very popular club here, and are established, but a start-up club wouldn't.

LOL typical oblivious rugby league fan. Haven't ever heard of AFL being played there? Or the fact that ANZ Stadium was where all the athletics was held for the 2000 Olympics? Surely it's gotta be an oval ground if the athletics was held there...if there'd been massive renovations, you'd have heard about it.

There actually has been pretty big renovations to ANZ hence why it now only holds 80,000 compared to the 110,000 it could originally and part of those renovations were getting rid of the athletics part of the field and moving seating in.

PostSubject: Re: BREAKING NEWS: Israel Folau signs with AFL side GWS   BREAKING NEWS: Israel Folau signs with AFL side GWS - Page 4 Icon_minitimeTue Jun 01, 2010 10:53 am

Well he's a massive loss to the game but this could all turnaround for the AFL. With the last 10 or so years ago scares of huge Rugby Union raids were going on. Players like Sailor, Tiquiri, Tahu, Gasnier, SBW, Matt Rogers, etc. have left the game and pretty much all of those apart from SBW have come back or are about to come back. Kinda shows how League players are League players and if there is any sport that is the most similar to it, it would be union, but they still can't compete. AFL is a whole new skill set and I don't see either surviving too long. They will continue attempting to and lure the Haynes', Inglis' and Slaters but after these two show that the transition is too hard, things will slow down. On the marketing side of things, of course its great when developing a new team in League-dominated areas, but this can only last for so long if these players don't succeed.

As for the NRL and management, terrible job in trying to secure yet another star. The whole mentality of 'there will always be another youngster to replace him' can only mean so much. Too many players are leaving and its not these unproven youngsters who get people through the gates.

The AFL raid won't stop here, some may here may have heard me talk of the NSW u16's fullback, named Tyrone who I played with last year and was contracted to Souths. It was an AFL club (Collingwood or Melbourne Demons) who flew him down to Melbourne, gave him a whole lot of merchandise for the side, let him train with the top side and offered him a pretty big contract that was probably bigger than what anyother NRL club was offerring. Luckily for us, Souths have recently secured him up for longer and looks to be staying here.

This shows that it isn't just the proven freakish first graders that they are targetting, but the junior ranks as well. The current NRL administration has proven that they are incompetent and only pro-active to a crisis like this, as shown with the Melbourne issue. I know that the NRL's attempt at gaining support and junior participation in Victoria is extremely poor compared to the amount of AFL development programs put in place at schools over here. Something must be done to stop this and the current administration, although made a good step forward in increasing the cap, just aren't smart enough to prevent the death of the game in areas like Melbourne.

On the AFL's behalf this is a pretty poor move. Signing Folau who hasn't kicked a ball in years on a deal that not even afl players who have been playing the game for over 10 years are earning. Great message they are sending out.

The only real statement they're making here is that "our players aren't exciting enough to justify a 1 million dollar salary but NRL stars are".

It's a marketing exercise and that's clearly all they care about.

Explains GC and GWS's unlimited drafting resources to a t.

I beg to differ... it's a great move for the AFL, the publicity about the code switch is HUGE and they would've had to spend a heap more money to get the same amount of media for the GWS team in sydney then that they're paying Folau.

Also the GWS isn't paying all of his salary, half coming from the AFL as a marketing tool, which is very well justified in regards of drawing attention to the GWS team

what profile does Folau have in Western Sydney though? surely Hayne, Jennings etc. would be the local favourites.. and Hayne has a far better boot on him than Folau, quite surprised they didn't make an offer for him.

do they think signing Folau will get more polynesians to play? if so that's highly unlikely as rugby is far too intrenched in islander tradition.

but there is no denying the publicity in signing him.

all valid points... and I'm sure they made a play for Hayne before he re-signed to Para this year.

Also Folau is one of the top players in the code and played for Australia up untill this year and he would get the same (if not a tad less) media attention the those guys, but inregards to value for their dollar the AFL will still come out way ahead then any attention prinnt based media would've given them.

It may not get more polynesians to play, but it will allow them to see that they have other options in regards to their sporting future - even more so if he becomes a success

It could be a masterstroke from the AFL in signing the two, but could be just as negative if they are unable to succeed.

maybe its not a poaching from the afl but more, other players wanting to come to the afl Wink

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/daneil-merrett-convinced-israel-folau-to-make-leap-to-afl/story-e6frf9jf-1225874219199

It's believed at least a dozen other NRL, rugby union and basketball players have approached the AFL during the past 12 months to switch codes.

It's understood a number of those athletes failed the same test in which Folau performed strongly.

It doesn't matter that he may not be a home town Western Sydney hero. He is a big name rugby player that plays State of Origins and i think played for Australia as well. That should be enough for a number of rugby fans to take an interest into how he switches codes.

Doubt the AFL are after the polynesian market to be honest either, they would be much more interested in taking junior NRL players that could certainly happen if Hunt and Folau do end up playing well.

The AFL didn't make the decision to give Folau this contact either, it was GWS and the marketing/publicity Folau brings to GWS would probably be bigger then a lot of current AFL players would bring. I would also much rather GWS be spending big on Folau, then come after players from my club with big contacts.

As someone I heard last night on The Back Page said, it might turn out bad for the afl as players start leaving because they aren't being paid as much as these players coming in.

Folau played Rugby? wow, never knew he played Rugby BREAKING NEWS: Israel Folau signs with AFL side GWS - Page 4 Icon_rolleyes

I don't see why everyone is concerned with this "push" into Western Sydney.. League is the number one sport here and it will remain like that for decades to come, signing some Queenslander from League to AFL can't really change 2million people's minds...

While it may create a short interest for a while, "oh look, Folau's playing.. let's tune it to see how it goes", that will no doubt happen, but what after the following few months? It will die off and the AFL supporters who generally support the game will stay, while the others, who just seemed interested in Folau for a couple of games, will fall off.

I am really starting to doubt GWS main reason for recruiting Folau. Yes he has a great leap, but so do many other rugby league players. He doesn't have a stand-out in any other department really, other than running over the top of players. He has never played AFL before, but yet he gets signed for 6 million dollars over 4 seasons. It is a complete waste of money imo. His heart is with league and always will be, he's made an idiotic decision just to become wealthy. He has no family in Sydney, but apparently he wants to become more of an 'individual' by leaving everyone he loves and play a sport he's never played before. I was pissed off at what he's done, but I'm over it now, i can't wait to see who we sign in his place.

manly4lyf pretty much summed it up.

All it does is just give them some cheap publicity, make them look like a bunch of dicks and piss off the high profile players in their game. In this matter, Folau and Hunt are both being employed by the AFL primarily for their 'public profile' and free media that their code swapping brings. Hunt has already generated millions worth of front page coverage.

And I highly doubt many RL fans will really care how he handles AFL and if it was to be someone of the likes of Hayne or Jennings who are local favourites in WS, there would be more interest obtained from RL fans in WS.

They'll both most likely play a few years of AFL and grab the ridiculous amounts of cash they've been thrown at them. Hunt will head back to France to play union for good money and Folau will probably do something similar, keeping in mind they'll both be in their mid 20's.

It's not a great point at all, in fact it's a stupid one. No surprise that it came from "The Back Page", one of the stupidest shows going around.

Rugby League is a form of rugby. It's pretty obvious that people calling it Rugby are referring to League anyway so no need to get all technical.
