I think at the end of the day, as things stand at the moment all of Petro, Smith, Scott, Shillington, Thaiday and Myles would all deserve spots in the Aussie 17, however that could change with injuries and what not, also the fact Scott and Shillington are unlikely to play finals will count against them, they risk being on the peripheral of the selectors in favour of players who play well in the finals series and GF etc.

Those two players in particular need to make sure they play really well for the rest of the regular season and than have a stormer for the PNG game so that they are firmly in the selectors minds.

As things stand right now the team I would pick would be.

1. Slater
2. Boyd
3. Inglis
4. Tonga
5. Hayne
6. Lockyer(c)
7. Thurston
8. Petro
9 Smith
10. Scott
11. Thaiday
12. Gallen
13. Lewis

14. Cronk
15. Myles
16. Shillington
17. Watmough

Only three specialist props but Myles, Thaiday and Gallen are all more than capable of playing there so that wouldn't be a problem.

Cronk given the nod over Gidley at this stage, Gidley had a better last game but one game doesn't change the rest of the series.

TLL would be very close to a spot in the team as well IMO and could easily come in for one of Myles or Watmough on the bench.

Boyd gets one of the wing spots atm based on the fact Morris had a horrible series and Boyd is in great form currently leading the Dally M.

Tonga in there atm but will come under real pressure from a returning Hodges and players like Jennings and lyon in the back end of the season.

That's a good team Scotty, very solid and one which will be hard to beat come the end of the year for the Four Nations.

I'd probably changes Watmough for TLL like you suggestd. Watmough has been real quite in the last couple of months.

That would be a team that i want to see, but probably wont see because of these reasons:

As much as i'd like to see Cronk there, the selectors will still pick Gidley as utility. Cronk will still be in the team though (i think they select something like 24 players for the Four Nations) as back up for the halves.

Your rigth about Shillington and Scott aswell, they are class players but unfortunetly the clubs they play for will hurt their chances of getting selected. Shillington has got a better shoot though since he is the incumbent prop (in the ANZAC test) and he will most likely still be there.
I really hope Scott plays consistent throughout the end of the season though, would love to see him in the green and gold. He is becoming a really good rep player i reckon.

And your right about Tonga too, he deserves a spot (some may say he dosnt because of the form of the Cowboys, but i think he is underrated and one of our best players who gets no recognition because the Cows have been dreadful this season).
If Hodgo is fit and picks up on some form then he'll def get the spot (and i won't be complaning if that happens). However is Hodgo isn't right to go then Lyon will get it. The only shot Tonga has is if both are not available.

Billy Slater
Darius Boyd
Greg Inglis
Willie Tonga
Jarryd Hayne
Darren Lockyer
Johnathon Thurston
Petero Civoniceva
Cameron Smith
Matthew Scott
Paul Gallen
Sam Thaiday
Greg Bird

Kurt Gidley
Luke Lewis
David Shillington
Nate Myles
-------------------
A massive darkhorse would be Mick Crocker. the usual selection criteria for him is ifCrocker is fit to play, He would be selected. He was probably the best backrower in the comp in 2008, Played pretty much all the rep fixtures that year, Wasn't selected for the World Cup Team along with Wingy because they were departing the NRL. He then signs with Souths and after just one game, he gets selected for State of Origin, Plays well the first game, He cannot be blamed for his rusty efforts in Game II or Game III, Queensland surely should of thought of that when he was picked for Game I.

Crocker is a prototype player you'd want for pressure games, His leadership, aggression and consistency makes him pretty much an automatic pick for Queensland every year pending fitness.

If Gasnier is in some form, He would play centre with Inglis to go to the wing (Hayne out)

If Greg Inglis has to play out of position on the wing to make room for Gasnier i think i'll start a RIOT... As much as i think Hayne doesn't deserve a spot, he'll still get it and no way would the selectors contemplate moving GI to make room for Gasnier.

Other than that, i'd be happy with that side too.

Haha dream on mate, there isn't a player in the game that would push Inglis to the wing, let alone someone who's been away from the game for nye on 2 years and has about 8-12 games to force his way into the team.
