2010 Tri-Nations - Game 1: New Zealand V South Africa Tri_nations

Defending champions South Africa will meet the All Blacks in the first game of the 2010 Tri-Nations. 2009 saw South Africa defeat the All Blacks in all 3 games, so the ABs will be looking for revenge. Both have been convincing with their test season opening series, All Blacks winning 1 against Ireland and 2 against Wales, South Africa winning 1 against France and 2 against Italy. The two look to be a lot stronger than the Australians and I beleive it's pretty safe to assume one of these two sides will be crowned 2010 Tri-Nations champions, so there is a lot to play for.

New Zealand:
Mils Muliaina, Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Joe Rokocoko, Dan Carter, Jimmy Cowan, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (captain), Jerome Kaino, Tom Donnelly, Brad Thorn, Owen Franks, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock

Reserves: Corey Flynn, Ben Franks, Samuel Whitelock, Liam Messam, Piri Weepu, Aaron Cruden, Richard Kahui

South Africa:TBA

reasonably happy with the team, will be great to see the Nonu Smith combination back in black. Although given South Africa's kicking style of play would have been good to see Israel Dagg at the back, get him running back at ya they may think otherwise. Joe Rok better have his hands ready they are going to drop bombs on him all game.

Unfortunately the winner of this years Tri Nations will be one of these two teams, I cant see the Wallabies coming close Sad.

In that case I would prefer it to be the Boks to take it all out again so ill be cheering for them Very Happy.
Sourth Africa by 1-12, ill say 23-18.

I think the ABs can manage it this time - especially with the injury worries the boks have.

ABs 1-12 with a last minute try winning the game.

ANNOUNCEMENT: I hereby rescind my derision of Kieran Read - his arrogant BS was a long time ago now and he's just playing way too well for me to hate this much Smile

Our forwards absolutely dominated the "best" forward back in the world in every aspect, scrums, lineouts, mauls etc. Very impressive performance. Can't really fault any of the ABs and its quite hard to pick a man of the match, but think I'd give it to Mils.

13+ was never in doubt 2010 Tri-Nations - Game 1: New Zealand V South Africa Icon_wink

How dirty is that scumbag Bakkies Botha! I would rather start Bekker anyway.

Although Ricky Januarie's performance wasn't too bad, the Boks definitely missed Fourie du Preez. Januarie tried to play a similar way to du Preez, but just doesn't have that deadly kicking game. Would have been interesting to see how Joe coped had du Preez been kicking to him all night like last year. Good news for us and the Aussies is that he won't be playing at all this year.

O. Franks, Woodcock, Mealamu, Read, Thorn, Donnelly, Nonu, Smith and Muliaina all were very impressive. I don't think there will be any changes made and I really think there shouldn't be. We couldn't have hoped for a better TriNations opener, hopefully that kind of form carries on throughout this year and next, if it does Richie will be holding up that World Cup for sure.

GO THE ABS!

I wasn't impressed with Cowan so I wouldnt mind seeing Weepu get a go?

Other than that, was an awesome performance from the boys. All played well and I doubt there will be many changes if any.

Yea Jimmy had an off night. Piri plays his best rugby against the Boks, so they should give him a start. Cowan will defintly bounce back.

Piri gives us more creativity in our attack. Not a fan of his defence though can be a bit lazy ay.

I don't see Cowan being benched for Weepu - while we all agree he deserves it, he's basically been pigeon-holed as an impact player by the coaches and we all know how stubborn they are.

Was awesome to see mealamu step up like that as well - he had a lot to prove even though there's a dearth of no-talent behind him.

Top stuff by the ABs, really belt up the Springboks across the park. Agree with what hendo said about SB's really missing Du Preez, he's streets ahead of Januarie. De villiers was wasted out on the wing, he wouldn't be a bad look in at 12 ahead of olivier. and Kirchner is not up for international rugby, he's a standard super 14 fullback at most imo. Steyn should be there though but i'm not too sure what the case is with him.

Kirchner rides on the coat-tails of the Bulls - he's the Leon McDonald/Caleb Ralph of South Africa Wink

IMO Jean de Villiers is a lethal 12 (easily my fav SA player) and was definitely wasted on the wing, move him back to 12, Olivier solid impact off the bench and bring in another wing - Pieterson or one of the Ndunganes maybe? Else promote Aplon.

Reckon the Aussies will watch that game and feel very afraid...

Promote Aplon, I rate that guy. I wouldn't mind betting we see him get a run at Fullback before the Trinations is over. They've only named Kirchner as the only specialist FB.

They really are lacking in depth of FBs though, if they ain't going to select Francois then the only other option other than Kirchner and Aplon would be Earl Rose I reckon.

Yea P'Rus has nailed it. the coaches see Weepu as the impact player off the bench, while Jimmy is there I can't see him getting a start.

Although I read today that Cowan is injured so Weepu may get his start afterall, and if I were Alby Mathewson I'd be getting a little excited Smile

Kahui and Joe Rok are two others that have come away with injuries. Will be interesting if the two aren't back for the next game, what they will do, Ranger could cover the wing and Dagg or Stanley could be brought in to fill the bench spot or they may call up Gear or Guildford.

Yeah saw that - would've preferred Gear admittedly as I think he has more punch than Guildford but there you go.

Mathewson was always next off the rank. Is he definitely with Auck for the NPC? I read somewhere him referred to as "Auckland's Alby Mathewson" which made me a sad panda Sad

I don't think he is playing for Auckland, I checked the Auckland RU website and he doesn't feature in their 2010 ITM cup squad.
