2010 Tri-Nations - Game 2: New Zealand V South Africa Tri_nations

New Zealand got off to an ideal start to the 2010 Tri-Nations with a convincing 20 point win over the Springboks. The two teams now travel down to Wellington for the second clash.

NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS
Mills Muliaina, Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Rene Ranger, Daniel Carter, Piri Weepu, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Tom Donnelly, Brad Thorn, Owen Franks, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock.
Reserves: Corey Flynn, Ben Franks, Sam Whitelock, Liam Messam, Jimmy Cowan, Aaron Cruden, Israel Dagg.

SOUTH AFRICA SPRINGBOKS
1. Gurthro Steenkamp, 2. John Smit (Captain), 3. CJ van der Linde, 4. Danie Rossouw, 5. Victor Matfield, 6. Schalk Burger, 7. Francois Louw, 8. Pierre Spies, 9. Ricky Januarie, 10. Morne Steyn, 11. Bryan Habana, 12. Wynand Olivier, 13. Jaque Fourie, 14. Jean de Villiers, 15. Zane Kirchner.

Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, BJ Botha, Andries Bekker, Ryan Kankowski, Ruan Pienaar, Butch James, Gio Aplon.

Two forced changes for the Springboks, CJ Van der Linde comes into start as prop as a replacement for the injured Jannie du Plessis and Danie Russouw is brought into the starting line up to replace the suspended Bakkies Botha. Ryan Kankowski is brought in to fill the bench.

I am expecting another strong performance from the All Blacks and once again to win it by 13+

yea I reckon if Cowan is injured we could see Alby get his first start, I wouldn't be surprised if they left Weepu as the impact player of the bench...

Alby Matthewson could be a good impact player with his quick runs from the ruck. Could get a lot of metres when the forwards are tired.

Nah if Cowan's out they'll start Weepu - they just won't start Weepu if Cowan's fit.

Boks to put in a much improved performance but still I think the AB's will be too good and win by 1-12.
Ill say 28-20.

Ranger is set to start if Joe isn't fit, what a joke!

Also Donnelly is now in doubt.

They're just resting Donnelly, he is going to be good to go which is pretty crucial

Is Boric injured or have they just been chosing Whitelock over him? I definitely hope Donnelly is all good, put in a great performance against the Boks, in fact I don't think he's done a thing wrong in all his all black matches.

ABs team has been named - Weepu and Ranger are starting; Cowan on the bench and Dagg also to provide outside-back cover, Ranger will provide midfield cover if required.

Mills Muliaina, Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Rene Ranger, Daniel Carter, Piri Weepu, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Tom Donnelly, Brad Thorn, Owen Franks, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock.
Reserves: Corey Flynn, Ben Franks, Sam Whitelock, Liam Messam, Jimmy Cowan, Aaron Cruden, Israel Dagg.

I'm happy with Weepu starting (he deserves it after his and Cowan's performances last week) but starting Ranger against the Boks is absolutely moronic. Ranger on the bench is fine, but not starting - I still reckon a back three of Dagg/Jane/Mils would be the best against the Boks...

Haha, well obviously a couple of interesting changes. Cowan being dropped to the bench is a big call, obviously I was wrong about the whole 'keeping Weepu as an impact player' theory.

Agree with you on Ranger, reckon he'd be better suited coming off the bench, I expect Springboks to target him like they did with Joe Rok last season, Dagg or Guildford would have been safer options.

All Blacks for sure, nothing beats Test Match rugby. Can always watch the Warriors after the game thanks to MySky.

New Zealand won which puts them in a great spot to take out the 2010 Tri-Nations series, shouldn't rest on their laurels though.

Great game, what a try from Dagg sensational stepping from him. Glad to see Rene Ranger get a try although I thought he had a pretty average game, made a few stupid mistakes.

Daniel Carter’s goal kicking was terrible. Kieran Read another great performance he is making that number 8 spot his own. Did Cruden get on the field this time lol? I can’t remember seeing him.

Israel Dagg! what a legend, that try was amazing! another solid performance by the ABs Weepu and Read were the standouts for me.

Yeah I'm sold on Owen Franks (still unsure on Ben but he's only really playing bit parts anyway) and I publicly ended my hate on Kieran Read last week already Very Happy

Seeing the tempo of the game you can see now why Tialata was dropped - he's not totally gone but will have to seriously improve his fitness in order to maintain this pace.

Read's performances have been great - still makes some major flubs here and there but is just everywhere and has become a real workhorse which is what you need in a good No.8. While he's probably not quite as good ball-in-hand as So'oialo was, nor anywhere near as good at the back of the scrum (which was always a MAJOR strength of Rodneys') his defence is huge and his breakdown work supports McCaw's superbly and allows the likes of Kaino to just focus on his defence (and damn is he doing that well); not to mention his support in open play.

What I'm also really loving is how settled Nonu and Smith are looking in the midfield - Olivier and Fourie are no easy-beats but they were just completely overshadowed by the Canes pair (was really interesting to watch Kamo illustrate Olivier's defensive weaknesses in the drift though - were it not for his ban I'd be putting de Villiers back into 12 immediately).

Finally while the ref seemed to control the game well enough all in all, the yellow card on Russouw was ridiculous and he seemed to relent on his yellow-card thread to McCaw as the game wore on. Boks only really had themselves to blame though. Also de Villiers' 2 week ban was over the top as well, sure his tackle on Ranger was a bit silly but he had him only just past horizontal and held onto him to control the descent (as opposed to dropping him which usually warrants further punishment since it's more dangerous).
