2010 Tri-Nations - Game 3: Australia V South Africa Tri_nations

Australia's first hit out of the 2010 Tri-Nations and they will host the Springboks in Brisbane. Hard game to tip, Aussie haven't been convincing in their previous tests this year whereas Springboks have been outclassed in their 2 games over in NZ and haven't got a good record at Suncorp.

WALLABIES:
Adam Ashley Cooper; James O'Connor, Rob Horne, Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell; Quade Cooper, Will Genia; Richard Brown, David Pocock, Rocky Elsom (captain); Nathan Sharpe, Dean Mumm; Salesi Ma'afu, Saia Faingaa, Benn Robinson. Replacements: Stephen Moore, James Slipper, Rob Simmons, Matt Hodgson, Luke Burgess, Berrick Barnes, Kurtley Beale.

Only real surprise to that Wallabies squad as they have James O'Connor starting on the wing, will be interesting to see how he goes. Not that I'm a Wallabies supporter but I am happy to see AAC back in the 15 jersey, by far their best option.

SPRINGBOKS:
Zane Kirchner; Gio Aplon, Jaque Fourie, Wynand Oliver, Bryan Habana; Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar; Pierre Spies, Ryan Kankowski, Schalk Burger; Victor Matfield, Danie Rossouw; B.J. Botha, John Smit (captain), Gurthro Steenkamp. Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe, Dewald Potgieter, Francois Hougaard, Butch James, Juan de Jongh.

Gio Aplin gets a start replacing the suspended De Villiers with de Jongh coming onto the bench, Ruan Pienaar gets a start at scrumhalf with Januarie left out completely, Hougaard coming onto the bench. Van Der Merwe comes in for the injured Bekker and finally Ryan Kankowski gets promoted to a starting spot Potgieter takes the bench spot and Louw misses out. Massive changes for the Springboks, a couple which were forced options.

Yeah Louw was totally outplayed in the first two games so Kankowski deserves a shot...certain players are either going to shine or be invisible depending on the overall performance - I'm looking at you Spies and Habana...

All in all I think the Boks pack will just be too much for the Wobblies and the respective backs basically cancel each other out.

Wallabies backline is betterin every position except centre and maybe 1st 5 depending on how Cooper handles the step up in intensity. THey should be playing Kankowski at 8 because Louw wasnt as shit as Spies has been

Yeah Spies goes missing when his team's on the back foot - I guess PdV is counting on early dominance by the rest of the Boks and thus Spies will step up...

Habana is the best winger in the world. Been a bit quiet in the first two tests though but he sure shits on Mitchell and O'Connor.

Agree Hendo and I rate Fourie over Horne too. Gitaeu has it over Olivier, as does Genia over Pienaar (although I really rate Pienaar), while Steyn and Cooper are very different players - Cooper is a better runner and has more variety while Steyn is a much better kicker and controller but has a very limited arsenal (as exposed by the ABs) so overall I rate them about equal. Gio Aplon is an exciting talent, but O'Connor just has a considerably more complete game - even though he's not really a wing...

Genia > Pienaar
Steyn = Cooper
Mitchell < Habana
Giteau > Olivier
Horne < Fourie
O'Connor > Aplon
AAC > Kirchner

Wallabies: 4
Springboks: 2

Aplon over O'Connor, hard to judge considering we haven't seen O'Connor on the wing. Remember how rubbish O'Connor was in last years tri-nations Smile

True - but then Aplon is also young an inexperienced so it'll come down to how they respectively handle it - I reckon O'Connor will handle it better and his greater overall skill-set outweights Aplons raw attacking skills

Yea so you have pretty much the same as me Pantherus but I think that Drew Mitchell is better than Habana as he has a far greater ability to beat defenders rather than catch the ball and run to the line which is pretty much all Habana does

surprisingly Aplon is 27, he's been with the Stormers since 2007 but only really made a name for himself this season.

Nah you're selling Habana short there mate Smile

@Hendo that is a surprise for sure! All the commentary about him I've read implied he was some new, young star...

no way is Mitchell better than Habana. Habana is much better in every aspect. Massive on defense, always puts in an awesome kick chase and who needs to beat a defender when you can find gaps like he can. Just take a few minutes and watch this highlight video of Habana in 2009, might want to mute it though, it's a pretty shit song.

oh and Mitchell wouldn't even be in the team if Peter Hynes and Digby Ioane weren't injured.

Pretty much all of those tries were just running fast, any decent wing could have scored those. I would take Cory Jane over him any day

Going on the Boks performances in NZ im kinda confident plus they have an appalling record here in Brissy.
That being said the Wallabies were pretty bad in their June test matches.

Im tipping the Wallabies to win by 1-12 though, looking forward to it Smile.

Get keen! Love Tri-Nations rugby even though I'm not the biggest rugby fan. I'm not too confident heading into this game, South Africa should win, but still should be a good game (hopefully) Smile

Can't wait to see how Genia and Cooper go tonight... they're calling it "Rugby's version of JT and Locky".

The Tri Nations is finally here, The true Champions finally get to kick of their campaign. Should be a cracker, tipping a close one until the final stages and then our boys who are fresh and raring to go to close the game out in style. The key is obviously in the 9 and 10 the combo is magic and was a major factor in the Reds success this year so i expect know different tonight. Not to sure why they are being compared to Locky and JT obviously completely different games and once again a shit media beatup. O'Connor will be the roamer probably will see limited time on the wing so i expect him to have the same impact as if he were playing FB. If we get on top in the Forwards their will be no stopping us..

UP THE WALLLLABIES!!

If the Wallabies think this was a great performance they are
dillusional, they played a team that had been bashed two weeks in a row
by the All Blacks, that missed players due to suspension and injury and
a team that was completed washed up.I can never understand why they
always get excited by wins like this agaiinst a poor team, if they beat
the All Blacks next week that will be a great win, however they are
playing in Australia and should win as it is home advantage.the
commentators Clake, Kearns and Martin always do this and get excited
way too soon.

Wow state the obvious, who said anything about getting carried away. The commentary team are a bunch of wankers, the coaching staff and players are the ones that matter and i'm certain they won't be getting carried away.

Anyway we did what we had to do and even though the S.A team are in a slump we still had to be on our game. The refing was pretty pisspoor i thought and i agree that we should just use a NZ ref and vice versa when other teams play. Both Fourie and Coops have been cited, If Coops gets suspended i will be spewing.

I thought overall it was a decent showing, alot of positives to take out of the game. We dropped off abit in the dieing stages and there were a few nervous moments but Genia sealed the game as he so often does. Our back 3 were shocking under the high ball last night, usually they are fairly solid especially AAC and if we do the same against the AB's it's pretty much game over. Pocock was unreal not sure who got MOTM but for me he was a clear standout, followed by Genia and Gits who looks like he is getting back to his old self. Fourie was their best player by a mile.

Bring on the Pretenders can't wait.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Digby is out for around 6 months which is obviously season over and also shit news for the reds. Shattered for the bloke, he would have been more than handy coming into the team.
