The new Super 15 Competition will kick off on the weekend of Friday 18 February in 2011 and feature a host of innovations to provide the ultimate goal of more rugby content!

The highly anticipated new draw was released today by SANZAR and features a number of adaptations to previous incarnations.

The New "Super" Rugby

*One new team – the Melbourne Rebels.
*An expanded format in which teams are grouped into conferences (the 5 Aussie teams, the 5 Kiwi teams and the 5 SAF teams). Throughout the season each team plays every other team in their conference twice (both home and away) and four of the five teams in each of the other conferences.
* Sixteen games (compared to 13 now) in the regular season.
* As there is an odd number of teams, one team will have a bye each week.
* Each team will play 12 of its 16 games within its own country (ie. only four over seas games).
* The finals will feature the top team from each conference plus the next three highest ranking teams (based on most points) – called the “Wild Card Qualifiers”. The top two ranked teams will have the first week of the finals off.
* Three weeks of finals. Week 1 will see 3rd ranked team v 6th ranked team and 4th v 5th, both elimination finals.
* In Week 2 the 1st ranked team plays the lowest ranked winner and the 2nd ranked team plays the highest placed winner (clear?). Week 3 will be the final!

Sounds quite exciting, looking forward to the new season. Pretty sure we've got the Force first up, also can't wait until we get our revenge against the 'Tahs. I fancy our chances in the Aussie conference.

Seems pretty drawn out though, and not sure about rigging it so that each country hosts a play-off match.

Someone suggested that they should work like champions league soccer. Take top 4 sides from ITM Cup, Currie Cup and 4 Australia sides and have a Super12.

That just wouldn't be fair as for most of the ITM Cup the All Blacks don't even participate.

It's a bullshit system I reckon.

Should have just gone with the current format where every team plays each other once but extended the finals system to six. Which would have round 1 of the finals 3 hosting 6, 4 hosting 5, 1 & 2 week off. Then semis which would be 2 hosting highest ranked winner of the first round, and 1 hosting the other winner from the first round. Highest ranked winner of these games host the final.

There new method drags on a lot I reckon, and from what I've heard this is a shortened form as we have a WC next year?

Sounds stupid to me, the tightly contested AUS and NZ pools will more luckily hood of SA teams in the Finals due to the wild card crap, good work.

That's a really good point actually..

Not sure what to think, can't knock it until we've tried it i guess but my first impression is they've almost over thought what to do when sometimes keeping things basic is the way to go. Also don't like playing 4 of the 5 in other conferences, what's the go with that?

Its interesting.
Not a fan of the finals series being so far after the regular season ends.

Week 1 fixtures:
Feb 18 - Hurricanes (NZL) Highlanders (NZL)
Feb 18 - Melbourne Rebels (AUS) v Waratahs (AUS)
Feb 19 - Blues (NZL) v Crusaders (NZL)
Feb 19 - Brumbies (AUS) v Chiefs (NZL)
Feb 19 - Sharks (RSA) v Cheetahs (RSA)
Feb 19 - Lions (RSA) v Bulls (RSA)
Feb 20 - Reds (AUS) v Western Force (AUS)
Western Stormers (RSA) Bye

It will be good to start off the new season with a win Razz.
