2010 Grand Slam Tour: New Zealand V Scotland Hika+Elliot+New+Zealand+Blacks+Training+Session+fplk0ECDLT0l

Sunday November 14
Scotland v New Zealand
Murrayfield Stadium
6:15 AM NZDT

ALL BLACKS
TBA

SCOTLAND
TBA

After beating England at Twickenham last weekend, the All Blacks move on to Scotland in hopes of keeping their Grand Slam alive. Expecting a weaker lineup than the previous match, with some of the extended squad being called into starting spots, most notably Hika Elliot who will gain his first test cap after warming the bench for 80mins on 3 different occasions. The All Blacks have met Scotland 27 times and have never lost. I am predicting them to keep this winning streak alive with a 20 point victory.

Looking forward to see how Smith and SBW play like together as most other All Blacks fans are. Suprise that Ellis got the nod ahead of Alby for the reserve halfback spot, considering Alby started last test.

Wanted them to start Donald. That would have gave me more of a reason to wake up for the game.

AB's to win by 15.

All Blacks winning comfortably 49-3. SBW getting man of the match but you can't really fault any of the ABs on that performance. Hika's debut was decent, hoping he's done enough to stay in the squad.

Yeah good performance by the boys. SBW proved that he is good enough for international rugby. Although their was little doubt. Gear was another of our best. I am starting to think he and Jane will be our WC starting wingers. On to Ireland.

To be honest, i surely hope so. But knowing how Henry and co have picked over the last few years no doubt 1 of Sivivatu/Rokocoko will be there.

On the game, good display by the boys. I definitely think SBW looks more comfortable at #12, even Donald and Toeava had decent games. Starting to look like this team is ready for next year.

I'd still prefer a Nonu/Conrad combination in the big games.

SBW and Gear were definitely the standouts IMO - noted by the fact that when Ellis scored, which 2 players were right there? Gear and SBW...

Yea I can't wait till next years Tri-Nations when we really get to see how good SBW is, be a tougher job when he's facing up against Jaque Fourie and Jean de Villiers.

also Hika had an impressive first test, be interesting to see whether or not he'll keep his spot when Corey Flynn is available.

yeah i'm annoyed with the nonu's h8'rs. give it up
sure SBW played well but he's still got sh!tlaods to learn. and the lessons he needs to learn can only come from playing aginst aus and the saffa's or the s15.
still he had an awesome game. SBW just needs to get his big hits into the game and then he'll be a sensation to rival jonah
gear played awesome

whats really funny is during the week robbieDeans saying that Scotland could beat the ABs....and then they have a record loss to england. sweet sweet sweet

teach him to open his mouth about another team he's not good enough to coach.

I agree that one good game against Scotland doesnt yet make SBW a legitimate challenger for Nonu's spot.

But.... one thing that I've noticed with Nonu is that unless Carter and Smith are playing alongside him, he doesnt seem to have the same impact.

Going back to the start of the 09 test season - Carter was out for the first 6 test matches of the year and despite coming off a very good S14, Nonu was poor throughout that whole period (as was the rest of the team admittedly).

He was also poor in Sydney this year when Carter was out, and again was pretty quiet against England when paired with SBW.

I am a big Nonu fan - I especially admired his loyalty for sticking around after getting dropped in 07 and the fact he has worked his ass off to become one of the best 12's in world rugby.

But if SBW continues to improve at this rate, he presents a massive challenge for that spot - he is just as destructive running the ball but his offloads bring a whole new dimension to the game, especially from set pieces.

The AB's have usually used set pieces as a platform to break the gain line and set up phase play with Nonu usually the traget man. But with Sonny Bill, they're now looking to breach the defensive line completely so it means any set piece in the opposition half becomes a scoring opportunity. Thats pretty lethal ontop of the counter attacking our guys are already adept at off turnover ball.

Granted it was only Scotland on the weekend, but that try he set up for Gear would've been tough for anyone to stop. He ran a great line, and still popped the pass even with his marker making good contact in the tackle.

Unless Nonu can find a way to impose himself on a test regardless of who plays alongside him, he may well find himself edged out by the very player he has just taken under his wing.

^^^ Nicely said lol.

9. Cowan
10. Carter
11. Gear
12. Nonu
13. Smith
14. Jane
15. Muliaina

20. Weepu
21. SBW
22. Dagg

That should be our WC backs DEFINITELY. Cover all round and Carter doing the full 80 and Weepu there IF Carter gets injured. Gives us 2 superb players on the bench.

Sorry should have explained it more lol.

2 superb outside backs rather than having just the 1 with the other 2 spots usually taken up by a halfback and a flyhalf.

Kromy thats what you want the team to be like right? Not what you think the selectors will go for.

Looks good. Dagg and SBW would be pretty lethal as impact players.

Only problem is, assuming Weepu comes on as a tactical sub for Cowan as some stage, who would play halfback if Weepu were to get injured?

Pretty sure only front rowers can come back on after being subbed so that one injury would leave us in trouble.

Only way I could see it working is leaving Weepu on the bench purely as injury cover with no tactical role whatsoever. Which would be a bit of a waste of his ability imo.

By that logic they'd never be subbing players on unless someone's injured...

As pointed out though having Weepu start is probably a better call where he can just shift out if necessary to cover DC, otherwise he'll just come off for Cowan at around 60 minutes...
