New Zealand captain Richie McCaw is in the running to be crowned the world's best player for the third time.
France's Imanol Harinordoquy is the only European to join him on the International Rugby Board's Player of the Year award six-man shortlist.
McCaw, the current holder, is joined by team-mate Mils Muliaina.
The list is completed by the young Australian duo of Kurtley Beale and David Pocock and veteran South African lock Victor Matfield.

Should be Richie, or if they want to share it around then Pocock. Mils can't even get a nomination for NZ player of the year so dont know how he got in there

Yea I'm picking Richie, thought Kieran Read may have made the list.

Mils really gets in due to joining McCaw as highest NZ test cap holder. Read should've got nominated ahead of Mils.

It's harsh but I can't see McCaw being given it again - just like as kindergarten all the kids have to share their toys. Agree it'll probably be Pocock for sheer impact in the game.

The IRB award is only based on test matches from about Nov the previous year to the end of the Tri Nations, and Mils was outstanding in the test arena during that period.

But our awards include all the domestic stuff too and he missed most of the S14 so not much chance of him getting a nod there.

Hard to go past McCaw getting it, he was undefeated during the period the award is based on and his influence was immense right throughout.

But yea, politics may dictate they share it around as they did when Shane Williams got it in 08. In that case hopefully Pocock gets it.

Agree that it's between Richie and Cock. Both deserve it Pocock has been sooo good for us just about won games by himself at times but Richie is just so consistent so it will be tough.. I'd probably say due to us as a team being poor at times Pococks performances may stand out that much more then Richies who is in a very balanced AB team.. Would that be a fair comment? It shouldn't but it just may get him the award.

Yep I think its a fair comment. This year especially he was absolutely huge and probably shaded even McCaw at the breakdown. His individual performances will definitely stand out.

I'd like to see McCaw rewarded for his mammoth all round efforts - not only at the breakdown but his general play and captaincy as well, but I wouldnt have a problem with Pocock winning it either.

smashed it...

New Zealand captain Richie McCaw has been named the International Rugby Board Player of the Year 2010 in association with Emirates Airline.

The 29-year-old flanker is the first player to receive the prestigious accolade three times, as well as in consecutive years, cementing his position as one of the greats of the Game.

The accolade completes a hat-trick of IRB Awards for New Zealand announced today, with the All Blacks named IRB Team of the Year 2010 in association with Emirates Airline and Graham Henry unveiled as IRB Coach of the Year for a record fourth time.

Wow...definitely the right call but absolutely expected Pocock to get it in the interest of "sharing it around" - at least he'd be deserving of it, unlike Shane williams...

Richies taken his game to another level.

OK so with the rule change he's no longer the turnover king, that accolade can go to Pocock, but d4m richie is every where.

been rewatching some of the tests and his tackling and defensive anticipation is phenominal. He's either the 1st or second to the ball for almost every tackle.

Ritchie should win this easily, most consistent best player for New Zealand . He likes to lead by example which is highly commendable.
