http://www.nrl.com/news/news/newsarticle/tabid/10874/newsid/61008/inglis-rabbitohs-deal-blocked/default.aspx

Greg Inglis' future in the NRL remains up in the air after the NRL blocked his proposed move to South Sydney on Saturday.

The NRL advised the Rabbitohs that it must include the full value of a number of third party agreements relating to the Queensland Origin star's $400,000 a year deal.

Inglis, who reneged on a deal to sign with the Brisbane Broncos when third party deals failed to materialise, will now continue to in rugby league limbo as he is without a club for 2011.

In a statement released on Saturday, the NRL explained that the rules are in place to "ensure that any third party agreement is not in truth a vehicle to remunerate the player for playing rugby league at his club".

"Given the circumstances under which Greg became available to South Sydney, nobody can have been under any doubt about the importance of ensuring his contract complied with the cap," NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said.

"The NRL had already required the Broncos to include third party agreements within their calculation of the contract value and was insisting legal fees also be included when those negotiations ceased.

"South Sydney had been advised to have all proposed offers reviewed by the NRL before making any commitments.

"They chose not to do so and it has taken some time to access all details of the agreements.

"It is unfortunate for Greg that he is in the middle of a difficult situation and I assured him this week that these issues do not reflect on him but that they are matters for clubs in assessing the offers that they make.

"He is one of the games most highly valued players and we have assured him of that in no uncertain terms.

"That said the cap has to apply fairly to all clubs and one club cannot be allowed to do what others were prevented from doing.

"The rules on third party deals are clear.

"We have worked with clubs and players by substantially increasing the amount that sponsors can pay players through the $300,000 marquee player allowance in 2011 but without rules on third party agreements there would be no point in having a salary cap system."

South Sydney admitted they were "disappointed" and disagree with the decision, and will assess the situation this week with NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/souths-offer-up-sacrificial-bunnies/story-e6frexnr-1225973218899

SOUTH Sydney have told three high-profile players they are free to leave the club as they aim to free up $500,000 in their salary cap to sign Greg Inglis.

The NRL yesterday refused to register Inglis's contract with Souths because of concerns over a number of third-party sponsorship deals. The Rabbitohs are now scrambling to free up space in their salary cap and have told Beau Champion, Ben Lowe and Michael Crocker that they can look for a new club.

The NRL yesterday claimed Souths had negotiated third-party payments for Inglis without the knowledge of his manager Allan Gainey.

"The National Rugby League has today advised the South Sydney club that it must include the full value of a number of third-party agreements relating to Greg Inglis within the salary cap," the NRL said in a statement.

"The effect of the decision is that South Sydney will be required to advise the NRL as to how the club proposes complying with the $4.1 million cap in 2011 before Greg Inglis's contract will be registered.

"The announcement follows a legal assessment of a number of documents [some received as late as Friday afternoon] and a request from South Sydney that the NRL's determination be announced at the earliest possible opportunity."

The Sunday Telegraph has also learned:

* The contract submitted to the NRL only had Inglis being paid $190,000 under the salary cap, with the rest of his deal made up from third-party payments;

* The NRL wants Inglis to come under the cap at no less than $500,000 in a move that will force the club to offload $310,000 worth of playing talent from its roster;

* The Rabbitohs have told Champion, Lowe and Crocker that they will be released from the final year of their contracts should they be able to find a deal elsewhere.

It leaves the Rabbitohs relying on other clubs to sign at least two of their players to fit Inglis under the cap.

The Cowboys, Eels and Melbourne Storm are understood to be the only clubs with money left to sign any of the Rabbitohs players.

Champion's manager Sam Ayoub yesterday said his client would consider leaving the club if he could find a suitable deal.

"At this point in time Beau has a contract with the Rabbitohs for 2011," Ayoub said. "He will honour that contract. In saying that, if Beau can secure a suitable longer-term deal at another club we will consider it.

"Souths have a number of players coming off contract at the end of next year and they are in a position where they may not be able to keep them."

NRL chief executive David Gallop said the game's governing body would not make any concessions for Inglis or the Rabbitohs.

The Test star is now facing an uncertain future and may be forced to leave the code.

"Given the circumstances under which Greg became available to South Sydney, nobody can have been under any doubt about the importance of ensuring his contract complied with the cap," Gallop said.

"The NRL had already required the Broncos to include third-party agreements within their calculation of the contract value and was insisting legal fees also be included when those negotiations ceased.

"South Sydney had been advised to have all proposed offers reviewed by the NRL before making any commitments. They chose not to do so and it has taken some time to access all details of the agreements.

"That said, the cap has to apply fairly to all clubs and one club cannot be allowed to do what others were prevented from doing.

"The rules on third-party deals are clear."

The Rabbitohs also issued a statement saying they were disappointed with the NRL's decision to block the Inglis deal.

"The South Sydney Rabbitohs are disappointed and disagree with the decision of the NRL to include some of Greg Inglis's third-party agreements in the club's salary cap for the 2011 season," the Rabbitohs statement said.

"The Rabbitohs will assess their salary cap position as determined by the NRL's salary cap auditor today and make a decision on a path forward over the next seven days.

"The Rabbitohs will do everything they can to keep Greg Inglis in rugby league."

Souths CEO Shane Richardson was unwilling to comment while Gainey did not return calls yesterday.

How dumb can one club get? Why in the hell would you release Crocker, Lowe and Champion to get fucking Inglis? They will be even worse in 2011 if they go through with this. 3 players for 1 in return, what a shocking bit of business that would be. Yes he's probably the best centre of the past 4 years, but he's not worth that much. Would be fuming if i was a Bunnies fan right now.

If only he stayed with us. He's brought this all on himself and i just don't give a shit anymore what happens to him.

I would think we (warriors) would have some $$$ under the cap, but would probably only use it for a prop forward so that dont really work unless something can go with Asotasi?

Its a big gamble losing Champion, Crocker & Lowe to fit Inglis in. Not sure if i would be happy if my club did it tbh.

Wow you are more gullable then what i thought, Your bitterness of him leaving the Broncos is controlling you and making you look very silly with some of the posts you have come up with relating to this.

Just look at who wrote that article, and then you have to realise it's all over-exaggerated if it's even remotely true. NEWS LIMITED.
I mean I can safely say that I am certain that we had no agenda to release three players for GI or have to release three players for him.

We will only have to offload one player, If we did tap those three on the shoulder we certainly have B and C plans if our A option wanted to stay at the club it just gives us more chance to snare Inglis.

Crocker was interviewed on Channel 7, He said there is no way he is leaving and it's very positive in the SS Camp at the moment and no one else wants to leave either.

Junior Vaivai is rumoured to head off to Parramatta though I am not sure if his contract falls under 2nd tier or Top 25, He was Top 25 this year but he was more permanently part off the Toyota Cup Squad.

Beau Champion will be looking to fish for a longer term deal, He comes off contract at the end of next year and he will realise we have Dylan Farrell nipping at his heels, With Inglis and so many high quality youngsters in Mansour, Kane Morgan and James Roberts emerging he will certainly look for more stability with a centre position.

Not sure on how Ben Lowe stands with this whole ordeal, We certainly need his work-rate to clean up the rucks and is one of the most improved players in the NRL and is on his way to rise further. I'd certainly pick Champion with our Plan A option for contract termination.

Your club is a bit silly as well. Why go through all this, and possibly lose 2-3 good players for him? I also think Rusty and Richo are a bit silly. After everything that happened with us and Inglis, i soon realized he wasn't worth it. Now, with the money we have, we have a bigger chance to re-sign all our younger players for the long term. Players like Gillett, Hoffman etc are going to be asking for pay rises in 2012, and rightly so. As has happened in the past, we have signed superstar players and we have lost so much talent. Now, not getting Inglis is probably the best thing to happen to us over the past few seasons.

The reason i said why didn't he just stay with us, was because all of this speculation over his career would have been resolved weeks ago, and we'd be able to talk about something else for once. Yes i was ecstatic to learn he "agreed to terms" with us, i mean, who wouldn't be.

His contract was rejected at the Broncos for the same reason and they'd be more then likely still haggling over the legal bills so It would be more then likely still dragging on anyway.

STRANDED without a club and, for the moment, without an income, superstar Greg Inglis will meet Essendon coach James Hird tomorrow in the surest sign yet that his disillusionment with rugby league could result in his quitting the code.

Inglis remains in limbo after the NRL blocked his move from Melbourne to South Sydney over third-party deals. As the saga over his contract with the Rabbitohs drags on, his manager, Allan Gainey, confirmed to the Herald last night that he would meet the new Bombers coach.

Gainey also claimed Inglis is owed $270,000 by Melbourne, and was struggling to meet mortgage payments as he had not been paid for almost three months.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Gainey contacted the Storm's chief executive, Ron Gauci, late last week over money he said was owed to Inglis from his 2009 and 2010 contracts. The dispute over the $117,000 legal fees for the defence of assault charges against Inglis have clouded how much is owed, but Gainey asked Gauci to quarantine some funds for the Test centre to use while his contract wrangle dragged on.

''I haven't had a positive response yet,'' Gainey said.

Inglis, who married earlier this month, raised the subject of his income, or lack thereof, last week during a meeting with NRL chief executive David Gallop.

It has become another reason for the 23-year-old to become disillusioned with rugby league.

Gainey confirmed that Inglis would meet Hird tomorrow.

''Greg knows [Bombers great] Michael Long pretty well and they [Essendon] regard him as a tremendous athlete,'' Gainey said. ''[Chief executive] Ian Robson has been in touch with me right from the word go. He [Inglis] still wants to stay in rugby league but if Souths can't do the deal, he'll either have to go back to Melbourne, and his contract will have to be honoured, or he can look at other alternatives. We have to have a back-up plan.

''James wanted to talk to Greg about his interest in the AFL. His first choice is obviously to stay in rugby league, but I'll tell you that if he was purely choosing money, he'd be going the other way [to the AFL] for sure.

''I've got to look after his best interests.''

While it appeared Inglis might not be eligible for the AFL next year because he did not take part in the draft, it is believed he can indeed play next year as he has not played in the AFL during the past three years. But Gainey said St Kilda, who had shown interest initially, had pulled out of discussions because of - ironically - salary cap constraints.

There was condemnation of the NRL's stance yesterday. Peter Maher, a former Storm director who was sacked by News Ltd following the appeal against the club's punishment over salary cap breaches - which resulted in Inglis being forced to leave the Storm - said the NRL's refusal to endorse the third-party deals for the Queenslander was giving AFL a free kick.

''He loves rugby league more than any bloke I've ever met in my whole life, but it's as if they don't want him to play the game,'' Maher said. ''How can this be in the best interests of the game if this bloke leaves the code? What does that say to aspiring footballers out there? If Greg Inglis can't get a game, what chance is there for the rest of them? I just can't understand why they would let Greg Inglis leave the game.''

That said, Souths boss Shane Richardson issued a statement to members vowing that the Rabbitohs would do everything in their power to ''keep Greg Inglis in rugby league and at South Sydney''.

The Herald revealed yesterday the extent of discontent by one of the third-party sponsors, Aboriginal Medical Service chairman Sol Bellear, over salary cap auditor Ian Schubert's decision to exempt only a small portion of the Rabbitohs' prospective third-party agreements.

Gallop, however, defended the decision, insisting the Rabbitohs were using third-party deals in a way they were not designed to be; to lower the portion of the contract included in the salary cap rather than giving the player a top-up to his market value.

He said the principle of third-party deals was designed to increase a player's earning capacity.

''The third-party deals in Greg's case, however, were not being used to gain extra money,'' Gallop said. ''They were being used to reduce - below the current market value - what Greg was being paid by Souths to sign.''

The NRL chief executive added that ''the ruling against Souths … in no way reflects on the third parties involved, and there is no suggestion of any of them having done anything improper''.

What?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!

Do you mean the same guy who said Tonga was going to Parra, and a couple of months later this article was released?

Quote :
Then the rumours started. He wasn't happy he freely admits that.

But it was the speculation that he was set to walk away from the Cowboys to take up a contract at Brisbane or Parramatta that really hurt.

All four 3rd party companies have now come out and claimed the only contact they had with Souths about Inglis was to get his managers number and that Schubert ignored them. And now the RLPA want to take a look at the deals..
