Cowboys and Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston could miss the Harvey Norman State of Origin decider in Brisbane on July 6 after he was today charged by the NRL’s Match Review Committee with Grade 2 contrary conduct for contact with a referee.

Thurston made contact with referee Matt Cecchin in the 23rd minute of the Cowboys' win over the Warriors on Saturday.

The influential halfback is facing two weeks on the sidelines, even with an early guilty plea.

The charge follows amendments to contrary conduct rules implemented at the start of the season where either Careless, Reckless or Intentional contact with a Match Official can be charged as Contrary Conduct.

Under the rule, “It’s the responsibility of the player to avoid contact with match officials at all times during a match”.

In the event that the Cowboys challenge either the grading or the charge, a judiciary hearing will be held on Wednesday night at NRL Headquarters in Moore Park.

If Thurston pleads not guilty and is successful at the judiciary, he will be free to play in the Cowboys’ Round 16 clash against the Panthers at Penrith on Sunday.

A guilty verdict would rule him out of that game as well as State of Origin.

Thurston also has the option to challenge the grading and, if successful at the judiciary, he would miss the Cowboys’ match against Penrith but would be free to take his place against NSW.

Thurston and the Cowboys will have until midday tomorrow to notify the NRL of their decision.

Fellow Cowboy Tariq Sims is also facing a week on the sidelines after he was charged with Grade 2 Dangerous Contact on Warriors' Krisnan Inu.

Sims would miss a week with the early guity plea or two weeks if he challenges the charge and loses at the judiciary.

Melbourne's Sika Manu will avoid suspension with an early plea after he was charged with Grade 1 Dangerous Contact on Wests Tigers Gareth Ellis.

This is interesting, I didn't see it so I can't comment but I'm guessing it wasn't anything done on purpose of course.
This could harm JT's Dally M aspirations as well, wonder what is going to come of it.

There is no way that was intentional, Chicken Legs Checchin should just get the F*** out of the way. Even from the video you can see he's looking towards Mateo.

If he misses origin because of that then that will be a disgrace.

We'll flog the Blues with Cooper Cronk anyway.. Saying that JT should be fine with what has gone on of late.. Gallen (arm to the head, all good), Uate (spear tackle, all good), Ennis (basically everything you can think of, all good) JT will be fine and if not while it'll be a joke we will still win.

http://bigpondvideo.com/nrl/365477 ... check out the incident.

At no point was JT looking at the Ref when it happened.. he had his eyes on Maloney and was running towards him to stop him from scoring. How many times have we seen this happen before? a thousand times!

If he is suspended for 1 week.. he loses 3 Dally M points. If he's suspended for 2 weeks he'll lose 6. Either way, he'll still be ahead of everyone because he is 9 points ahead.

Soooo it appears you can come in with the deliberate swinging arm and get off... then a player accidentley runs into a referee and is threatened with 2 weeks? That'll do me Laughing

JT will get off anyway

Yeah its just a joke to be honest, surely he won't get suspended for that little incident. Cooper Cronk would definitely fill in for Johnathan Thurstan if he is out though, with Ben Barba or Scotty Prince on the bench. They wouldn't go with a 80 minute hooker Beckham that is for sure. But in saying that above he has no chance of missing state of origin III.

Yeah, i don't think he'll miss Origin.. but if he misses the Panthers game and loses 3 points from his Dally M total, i'll be filthy! Imagine at the end of the year JT misses out on his 3rd Dally M because of this stupid suspension -.-

Qldrs still whinging bout Gallens tackle Laughing But for some reason no mention of Lokyer's lifting tackle in the same game. And let's not forget that Thurston has been given plenty of reprieves in the past. ie: Kicking a guy in the head while on the ground or his tirade at the refs last year.. I doubt anything will come of this anyway..

Yeah he should get off easily, will miss three points per game from his Dally M total but, so six points down but he has a hefty lead over Foran.

I don't see any malice whatsoever in that, if he gets suspended (dunno about his carry over points) it's a bit stupid.

Quote :
The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will contest the grade two contrary conduct charge that has been lodged against co-captain Johnathan Thurston today.

The NRL’s match review panel has charged Thurston after he collided with referee Matt Cecchin in the first half of Saturday night’s round 15 NRL game at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The incident occurred when the Cowboys halfback came across in cover defence as NZ Warriors five-eighth James Maloney was on his way to the tryline for his side’s opening points.

The Cowboys have engaged solicitor Geoff Bellew to act on Thurston’s behalf at Wednesday night’s hearing at NRL headquarters in Sydney.

With an early guilty plea, Thurston would have received 202 penalty points.

Losing at the judiciary hearing will increase the penalty to 270 points.

If he is suspended, Thurston will miss this weekend’s round 16 NRL clash against Penrith, the deciding State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium and the round 18 game against Newcastle on July 11.

The Cowboys have yet to decide whether to contest second-rower Tariq Sims’ grade two dangerous contact charge.

Sims was put on report by referee Cecchin following a tackle on the Warriors’ Krisnan Inu in the third minute.

Meanwhile, scans today have cleared Thurston of any serious damage to his ankle after he was injured as he crossed for a try in the second half of Saturday night’s win.

He has a small tear in his ATFL which should allow him to play against the Panthers.

Thurston, who said the injury had improved significantly in the past 24 hours, will not join the squad in training until at least Thursday.

Scan results taken on front-rower James Tamou’s shoulder late today have yet to be analysed by the Cowboys medical staff and he remains in doubt for Sunday’s game.

JT will get off. I wouldn't worry too much if I was a QLDer. Afterall, it's bloody State of Origin, the greatest game of all, that's at risk for Thurston right now, surely the match review commitee would take that under consideration.

But for now, lets all hope he'll get suspended for 2 matches max so that he'd miss the game against my Panthers and then NSW. Smile

What do all those players have in common though, perhaps the blue dye in their jersey come origin night, it'll be a rort if thurston is out for even a week but I bet will be.

What a load of shit. Such a pathetic charge. Anyone who believes that Thurston deserves to be charged is a straight up retarded and would struggle to wipe their own arse.

Tariq's "crusher tackle" was piss weak too. There are dozens of tackles worse than that each week.

most people from the judicary are from NSW so that kinda is the reason why QLDer's get the wrong end of the deal most of the time.
