Wallabies wunderkind Berrick Barnes will lead the Queensland Reds in the absence of regular captain James Horwill when the team opens its Super 14 campaign next month.

The 22-year-old will assume the added responsibility as the Reds begin the season with an imposing double assignment in South Africa, starting with a first-up clash with 2007 champions the Bulls in Pretoria on February 14.

Horwill is recovering from a foot injury and is not expected to return to the side until mid-March.

"Berrick will captain the side," Reds coach Phil Mooney revealed at the team's season launch in Kelvin Grove this morning.

"He's a young guy who has prospered under Robbie Deans at the Wallabies. And although only a young man he has a lot of experience behind him with three of four years of Super rugby, and as I said, a couple of seasons of international rugby.

"Berrick epitomises all the qualities of our team that we're looking for. He's young, energetic, he leads from the front. He doesn't do a lot of talking but leads by his actions on the field.

"Where we are as a team, that's the sort of leader that we need. I think he's ready to do a very good job."

Barnes, who expects to begin the season at inside centre with Quade Cooper taking the No10 jersey, said he was looking forward to the challenge of captaincy.

"It's a great honour,'' said the Ipswich Grammar product.

"It's something I won't be taking lightly.

"The good thing about it is I'll have a lot of support from obviously the leadership group and there's a number of younger guys that have played a couple of seasons now that are really stepping up."

Barnes, who is himself on the way back from a knee injury suffered on the Wallabies' tour of Hong Kong and Europe late last year, expects to return to the line-up for the Reds' final trial match against the Western Force at Ballymore on February 5.

He said the Reds had no reason to fear their South African mission, which takes in the clash with the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld and then a meeting with the Stormers at Newlands in Cape Town six days later.

"Going to Africa first is going to be a big step for us,'' Barnes said.

"We really need a good tour there but not just that - we need to bond together and really make something of this.

"There's nothing to be afraid of going over there and playing there, it's just another football ground.

"Yes it's an intimidating environment but the great thing about it is we've got no baggage. We're a bunch of guys who all aim up."

Horwill, who expects to regain full fitness either the week before or after the Reds' bye in the Super 14 draw on March 21, endorsed his short-term replacement as captain.

"Berrick's the kind of guy that can do pretty much anything so I reckon he'll be great for the team,'' said the giant lock.

"The boys really respect him so he'll be someone who I think will take the team to where we need it to be.''

The Reds play their first pre-season trial on Saturday against the Waratahs in Toowoomba.

I don't think Barnes is the best choice, too much pressure on him at such a young age, Sean Hardman would probably have been my pick he has years of experience.

Barnes is a good player, but I certainly don't see him as captain material - not yet anyway...
