IT'S the 14th season of Super rugby and with five new coaches and plenty of player movement, this year's tournament looks wide open.

The competition opens with three local derbies and three trans-Tasman battles while the Queensland Reds travel to Pretoria for their match-up with the Bulls.

Highlanders v Brumbies
The men from New Zealand's deep south were the bottom placed Kiwi team in 2008 and it looks like they might struggle again this year. They used to have the wood on the Brumbies in Dunedin but not anymore. The Brumbies tasted success on their last visit and I'm picking them to start their campaign with a win. The Brumbies have a new coach and captain but there is still plenty of Wallabies on the playing roster and they should be too strong for the Highlanders who are going through yet another re-building phase.

Western Force v Blues
I wish I had a crystal ball to see how the Force players will react to the off-field drama that's plagued the team's preparation. After a vote of 'no confidence' in the way coach John Mitchell goes about his business, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the men from Perth will be a bit rusty. But Mitchell and the players are putting on a brave face publicly and they say they're all working from the same page. The Blues will not be at full strength this week so I'm leaning towards the home team who will have Matt Giteau steering them around the paddock.

Lions v Cheetahs
It might be week one but these two sides could battle it out for the wooden spoon again this season. Both have failed to attract any big name players and will be relying on some rookies to make the step up to Super rugby. Just one point separated them in last year's clash and this should be another close affair as well. I'm going for the Lions on the strength of their home ground advantage.

Crusaders v Chiefs
On Super 14 Extra Time on Monday night, Fox Sports expert Rod Kafer tipped the Crusaders to miss out on the semi-finals based on the fact that they have a new coach for the first time since 2000, and there's no Dan Carter in the side. The defending champs have also lost a number of experienced players who had over 600 caps between them. The Chiefs on the other hand, have twelve new signings and will be relying on the new breed to hit the ground running. I'm sticking with the Crusaders to give coach Todd Blackadder a winning start to his tenure. It'll be interesting to see if Kafe's prediction comes true in the long run though.

Hurricanes v Waratahs
Despite the Hurricanes making the play-offs in four of the last six years they are still chasing that elusive title. The Waratahs are also looking to win their first title but they've had the wood on the Wellington-based team winning the last two clashes. Colin Cooper is heading into his seventh season as Hurricanes coach and he has a good mixture of youth and experience at his disposal. The Waratahs are missing Dan Vickerman, Rocky Elsom, David Lyons and Matt Dunning this year but new coach Chris Hickey is very confident he has enough depth to remain competitive. After three wins in pre-season trial games I'm picking the Waratahs to maintain their recent domination over the 'Canes.

Stormers v Sharks
This local derby should be a cracker as these two teams have been picked by many to lead the South African charge in 2009. The Stormers finished last season with a real flurry of wins only to miss out on the play-offs on 'for and against'. If they can maintain that momentum they'll be hard to beat, but the Sharks are also coming off a good season. Their feeder team Natal won the Currie Cup and new coach John Plumtree has plenty of Springboks at his disposal. Because the Stormers have been traditional slow starters, I'll tip the Sharks to win another tight one.

Bulls v Reds
The Bulls are coming off a disappointing year in which they failed to defend the title they won in 2007. Some of their big names were inconsistent last year but if they all click they will beat any team on their day. Any side with the likes of Matfield, Botha, Spies, Wannenberg, du Preez, Habana and Ndungane must be respected, especially at home. The Reds don't have a great record on the road and they have a new look team that might take a few games to click. The Bulls to win this one but expect the Reds to put up a fight, unlike the last time they visited Pretoria and were beaten by 89 points.

Brumbies pack prepares for the giant Highlanders in the Super 14 opener

THE Brumbies are determined to muscle up against a huge Highlanders pack in Dunedin on Friday as they begin a campaign aiming for the Super rugby finals for the first time in five years.

The Canberra-based franchise start with a full strength side containing 10 Wallabies, including their prize recruit, Test hooker Stephen Moore.

New skipper Stephen Hoiles was respectful of a Highlanders side boasting few instantly recognisable names apart from All Blacks half-back Jimmy Cowan.

The Highlanders will have a weight advantage in the engine room, with their starting props scaling a combined 20-plus kilos more than their Brumbies counterparts.

"They are a big forward pack, their forwards like to take control of the game and every time they get close to their try line, you often see their forwards bunch up and do the tough stuff really well," Hoiles said.

"They've got a really good number nine (Cowan), who if you don't have your eye on him, he can turn you inside out pretty quickly, and a really good running ten (Daniel Bowden).

"Probably people back home don't know much about these guys, but we do. We certainly respect them.

"We know the biggest challenge will be for our forwards to muscle up against these big blokes."

Weight apart, the Brumbies will also be conceding height in the back row, with none of the starting trio topping 190cms, while the Highlanders will field players who are 192 and 196 cms. New coach Andy Friend opted for mobility ahead of height, with openside specialists George Smith and Julian Salvi as the starting flankers and Hoiles at No.8.

Under former coach Laurie Fisher, the Brumbies missed out on the finals in each of the last four years since winning their second Super title.
