PostSubject: WORLD XV   WORLD XV Icon_minitimeMon Nov 10, 2008 10:16 pm

Bored at work so decided to whip up a World XV based on current international players

1. Andrew Sheridan (ENG)
2. John Smit (SAF)
3. Tony Woodcock (NZL)
4. Victor Matfield (SAF)
5. Ali Williams (NZL)
6. George Smith (AUS)
7. Richie McCaw (NZL)
8. Ryan Jones (C) (WAL)
9. Fourie du Preez (SAF)
10. Daniel Carter (NZL)
11. Joe Rocokoco (NZL)
12. Matt Giteau (AUS)
13. Brian O'Driscoll (IRE)
14. Bryan Habana (SAF)
15. Mils Muliaina (NZL)

16. Andrew Hore (NZL)
17. Gethin Jenkins (WAL)
18. Paul O'Connell (IRE)
19. Schalk Burger (SAF)
20. Ricky Januarie (SAF)
21. Juan Martin Hernandez (ARG)
22. Shane Williams (WAL)

Some postions are obvious who the best player is, such as 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15.

Others not so easy, 9, 13, 8 in particular.

Certainly not convinced that BOD would be in a World XV anymore.

I would have Mortlock there.

It was one of the hardest postions to pick, and I definitly would not go for Mortlock he is too old now and has definitly lost form over this season. O'Driscolls problem is he has a weak team to work with so it's kind of a sympathy vote he made the side, if he was an All Black he I reacon it would be clear that he is the best centre in the World.

My knowledge of players outside of the 3N countries is very poor, so I won't try to critique much regarding them.

I note you have Du Preez and Matfield in there - surely they are there 100% on pre-2008 reputation (as is Rokocoko) since they haven't shown a smidgen of class this year.

BOD has been on the outer for a long time, and agree with you though that Mortlock is off too. However Mortlock would still be my pick.

I'd play Burger at 6 ahead of George Smith, just swap 'em around. Smith is good, but at 7 - Burger is a better 6 and Smith provides more all-around coverage of the loosie positions.

I don't know what Ryan Jones is like, but Rodney So'oialo must surely be pushing for that spot too.

Giteau gets the boot right out of that squad - sorry, but I just don't rate him. Put Jean De Villiers there instead.

Slight niggle here - Woodcock is #1, not #3 as he's a looshead prop. Is Sheridan a loosehead or a tighthead?

If he's a loosehead as well, then he loses out to Woodcock, and I'd take "The Beast" (can't spell his name for shit) from SA over him. Though Euan Murray showed some good ability against the ABs.

Januarie is getting heaps of plaudits for ONE FRICKEN PLAY. Sure, it was legendary what he did, but his general work is pretty average. He'd be the first choice halfback for the saffas, sure; but more because Du Preez is playing like shite. Cowan, Weepu, [the Argentinian whose name escapes me] would all push for spots, as would Mike Blair who was one of the class players for Scotland.

i would say O'Driscoll is such a shoein, he is a obvious choice (though i do like him
if jones is hard to include, why is he captain? (leardership ability i assume)
mils muliana is not a shoein to me....
wouldnt have him in mine

Who would you take as FB then?

I reckon Mils has taken the "world's best" mantle for fullback - now that Chris Latham has departed the scene.

Wouldn't rate Percy Montgomery above him (and he's retired anyway). Someone from the north then?

Victor is on there on previous years form just was unsure who else to take.

Joe Rok deserves his position based on reputation, as we all know once he gets his fitness back he will be no.1 winger one again.

The Halfback position was extremely tough to pick due to imo no no.9 really shining through since Byron and Gregan have both left and definitly do not think Jimmy Cowan deserves a spot.

Yea agree with the Smith for Burger decision.

Ryan Jones is a great no.8 and a great leader who imo is overall is a better player than Rodney.

Yea and both Woodcock and Sheridan are loose, and I completely forgot about the Beast Tendai Mtawarira, (haha I googled for the spelling). So I'd slip the Beast into 3 Woodcock into 1, Sheridan on the bench and cut Gethin Jenkins.

Wonder how different this team may be come the end of the tour...

Conrad Smith embarrassed BOD in Wellington earlier this year, will he have another chance to do so, or will they give that to Kahui...?

I do think that Josevata will be back well and truly by the end of the tour. He and Gear should be the ABs wings IMO. Sivivatu's out of form, Tuituvake hasn't upped his game to test level, and Kahui is a centre.

Soild squad mate, some of the interesting picks for me were, firstly O'Connel starting which I agreeing with however, J. Horwill does not deserve the bench spot imo. Also 2 hookers on the I would definitly get a prop on there. and Tuquiri has also been shit this year, imo Habanas been less shit haha

I think Tuquri's good because he has a high work rate unlike habana who just sits on the wing. You might be right about Horwill though, perhaps Matfield, Botha or Thorn would be a better option

1. Andrew Sheridan (ENG)
2. John Smit (C) (SAF) Captain of the team, McCaw, BOD & Jones will challenge for it.
3. Tony Woodcock (NZL)
4. Victor Matfield (SAF)
5. Ali Williams (NZL)
6. Schalk Burger (SAF) Picked him ahead of Smith as I think is suited to playing 6 more than Smith.
7. Richie McCaw (NZL)
8. Ryan Jones (WAL)
9. Fourie du Preez (SAF)
10. Daniel Carter (NZL)
11. Shane Williams (WAL) Would be awesome outside Carter & Giteau.
12. Matt Giteau (AUS)
13. Brian O'Driscoll (IRE) Still probably one of the best centres in the game.
14. Bryan Habana (SAF)
15. Mils Muliaina (NZL) Hes a shoe in for my team, Lewsey will challenge for FB spot.

16. Keven Mealamu (NZL)
17. Gethin Jenkins (WAL)
18. Paul O'Connell (IRE)
19. George Smith (AUS)
20. Frederic Michalak (FRA) Will be used as a HB sub, but can fill in at 10 if needed.
21. Stirling Mortlock (AUS)
22. Josh Lewsey (ENG) Snuck in ahead of Rokocoko because of his versatility.
