Super 14 Round 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Super 14 Round 3   Super 14 Round 3 Icon_minitimeTue Feb 24, 2009 11:14 pm

From RugbyHeaven.co.nz

A plague of injuries, naughty boys and the arrival of the first South African side on Kiwi soil for the new season. It's all happening and here's a rundown of the franchises looking into round three.

HURRICANES

In the news: Hooker Dane Coles is arrested for a late night indiscretion in Porirua.

Physio's table: Andrew Hore (ankle).

The good: They were 140 minutes late, but the Hurricanes players that appear on the team sheet turned up for the final 20 minutes against the Highlanders and looked pretty handy.

The bad: The Crusaders have won their past six matches against the Hurricanes and hold an overall advantage of 12 to 3. Which means the Hurricanes are due, right?

BLUES

In the news: Wing Rene Ranger is suspended for one match for a high and late tackle.

Physio's table: Ranger (suspected fractured eye socket), lock Kurtis Haiu (head knock), hooker Keven Mealamu (calf strain) Ali Williams (back), Rudi Wulf (broken wrist), Benson Stanley (hamstring), Jay Williams (ankle).

The good: Nothing rugby related here, but air points! The Blues are racking them up since arriving in South Africa. Joe Rokocoko flew over after the team followed by Grayson Hart and Francis Smith, who are now flying home, with halfback Taniela Moa flying over.

The bad: The economic recession and high crude oil prices mean 1 million air points are now good for a one-way economy trip* for one from Auckland to Hamilton. * Fares are non-flexi, non- refundable, with no baggage allowed and taxes not included.

CHIEFS

In the news: Fullback Mils Muliaina gets back spasms after a "series of team meetings". How many meetings are we talking? Just how long were these meetings? And what were they talking about that got Mils so tense?

Physio's table: Sione Lauaki (hamstring), Mils Muliaina (back), Richard Kahui (hip).

The good: Nothing to see here folks, move it along, go on now, go home to your families, nothing to see here.

The bad: The Chiefs' set piece has been shark-bait for the Crusaders and Waratahs and now they play, wait for it, the Sharks.

CRUSADERS

In the news: Corey Flynn breaks an arm for the umpteenth time, but does a Steve Austin and vows he will be rebuilt, stronger, better, faster Di.Di.Di.Di. I loved that show.

Physio's table: Leon MacDonald (shoulder), out of the Hurricanes match, Flynn (broken arm), Brad Thorn (heel), Andy Ellis (ankle), Richie McCaw (concussion).

The good: Centre Casey Laulala's retro post-try dance celebrations. They are straight out of the NFL's 1980s highlights reels. I want the funky chicken, Casey.

The bad: The Crusaders were forced to bus from Canberra to Sydney on Sunday instead of flying. In protest at the Sanzar enforced cuts, the team has hired helicopters to take it across town to AMI Stadium for Friday's match against the Hurricanes. In your face recession!

HIGHLANDERS

In the news: Fetu'u Vainikolo is suspended for one match after throwing a drink on a female bar patron. Highlanders CEO Richard Reid says the franchise doesn't have a drinking culture. They say denial is the first stage of recovery.

Physio's table: Prop Jamie Mackintosh (knee), lock Tom Donnelly (thumb).

The good: The law of averages suggests if you toss a coin 100 times, it will land 50 times on each side. The Highlanders must surely be nearing 50 heads in a row and despite their record are actually pretty good.

The bad: Mackintosh is out for six weeks as the Highlanders and coach Glenn Moore are spotted sacrificing a chicken in a desperate bid to gain favour with the rugby gods.

AUSSIE WATCH

In the news: Coach John Mitchell's charm is too much for Matt Giteau, who is heading back to Canberra next year with Drew Mitchell also set to leave Perth. In turn, Sam Norton- Knight is considering heading to Japan, so the Waratahs want Mitchell in Sydney. Keep up, I'm losing you!

Pick of the bunch: The Brumbies have won two close ones and beat the Crusaders despite an off night for first five-eighth Christian Lealifano. Winning ugly is always the sign of a good team and key players Stirling Mortlock, George Smith, and Mark Gerrard are firing.

SOUTH AFRICA WATCH

In the news: Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus gets the pip after his scrum is maligned: "I'm not sure what people mean when they say we're struggling up front," he said. They mean the scrum Rassie.

Sharks skipper John Smit urges his countrymen to stay at home so they can play the British and Irish Lions later in the year or, "rob themselves of the opportunity to play against the world's best players". Aren't they in the All Blacks and Wallabies?

Pick of the bunch: The Sharks have the swagger of a champion team after winning two tough matches, against the Stormers and the Lions (in extreme heat in Durban). Halves Rory Kockott and Ruan Pienaar are controlling well and the John Smit-led pack have been ruthless.

Super 14 Round 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Super 14 Round 3   Super 14 Round 3 Icon_minitimeWed Feb 25, 2009 5:44 am

Crusaders are still in doubt of playing their AB trio of McCaw, Thorn and Ellis; all three are bracketed to play in this Friday's clash with the Hurricanes, who are at full strength except for Hooker where they have to play their third string Hooker in Ged Robinson with Jacob Ellison Covering Hooker from the bench.

Meanwhile, Colin Cooper has made a number of changes to last weekend's starting XV; some already anticipated, some more interesting. The All Black midfield of Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith has been logically restored after both put in solid second half efforts in the last minute win against the Highlanders. The halves combination of Mathewson and Weepu is now being tried, with Weepu pushed out to 10 and Daniel Kirkpatrick on the bench along with last week's Captain Tamati Ellison and try-scorer David Smith, who makes room for Zac Guildford. This has arguably been the top backline that Hurricanes have been expecting from day one and it will be interesting seeing them tested agaisnt the defensive fortitude shown last week by the Crusaders, especially the competitions top try-scorer, Casey Laulala. It is in the forwards however, that Cooper has unleashed some surprises; dropping All Black Neemia Tialata to the bench in favour of Tim Fairbrother despite a solid showing against the Highlanders, and also playing Hawkes Bay's Karl Lowe at Blindside Flanker in place of Faifili Levave who has arguably been the Hurricanes' top performing loose forward so far, with his solid tackles and ball carrying. This is obviously a move on Cooper's behalf to combat the expected presence of Richie McCaw at the breakdown - though the failure of Wallabies George Smith and Phil Waugh to use the same tactic in the Bledisloe Cup match at Eden Park last year does not bode well for the move. Otherwise the quality locking duo of Jason Eaton and Jeremy Thrush is maintained, while regular Captain Rodney So'oialo is restored to No. 8 following his 1 week suspension.

Damn - this should be a cracker of a match!

CRUSADERS: Stephen Brett, Jared Payne, Casey Laulala, Tim Bateman, Kade Poki, Colin Slade, Kahn Fotuali'i, Thomas Waldrom, Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Ross Filipo, Brad Thorn, Ben Franks, Jason Macdonald, Wyatt Crockett.
Reserves: Daniel Perrin, Bronson Murray, Isaac Ross, George Whitelock, Tyson Keats, Ryan Crotty, Adam Whitelock.

McCaw and Thorn are both confirmed in the squad - that's a big blow for the Canes who would've really fancied their chances against a McCaw-less team...

Yeah STM - Canes looking mighty dangerous in the backs, but the forwards will really need to step up from last week if they want to have any hope.

I'm really liking the Brumbies actually - they're looking much more like the Brumbies of old.

They'll be even more dangerous with Giteau back again.

Crusaders vs Hurricanes
Waratahs vs Highlanders
Chiefs vs Sharks
Brumbies vs Force
Lions vs Bulls
Stormers vs Blues
Reds vs Cheetahs

Interesting round, the 'Saders V 'Canes is gonna be a great battle, I'm just hoping out on a clear night so hopefully we can see some real action from the 'Canes back line, if its wet the forwards will dominate and I think Crusaders will have the upper hand.

Interesting round, the 'Saders V 'Canes is gonna be a great battle, I'm just hoping out on a clear night so hopefully we can see some real action from the 'Canes back line, if its wet the forwards will dominate and I think Crusaders will have the upper hand.

Agree - especially after the lazy effort they put in against the 'landers.

Crusaders vs Hurricanes
Waratahs vs Highlanders
Chiefs vs Sharks
Brumbies vs Force
Lions vs Bulls
Stormers vs Blues
Reds vs Cheetahs

I think another pretty basic week in terms of tips but i do fancy the Chiefs to cause an upset at home after the sharks long flight, and as much as i would love the canes to beat the crusaders i just dont think it will happen this week.

The storemers blues game should be a close one but the stormers are just a bit to handy at home and that will be the difference.

Tahs, brumbies, bulls and reds should all just be too strong for there opposition and if we are going to see any 13+ games these will be the ones to target.
