Australia will face stiff opposition in the IRB Sevens in Adelaide

Australia coach Michael O'Connor admits the host nation has drawn a challenging assignment for the International Rugby Sevens in Adelaide next month.

Fresh from finishing runners-up to Scotland in the Plate Final at the IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai last weekend, the Australians have been placed alongside England, Samoa and Portugal in Pool A for the 16-team tournament.

England currently leads the World Series standings, together with South Africa, while both Samoa and Portugal are also ahead of Australia on the overall points table after four tournaments.

“We look forward to Adelaide, and performing in front of our home crowd,” former dual international O’Connor said.

“England has obviously been a form side in the World Series and Samoa has been a difficult side for us over a number of years.

“However, if there is one tournament you like to target in a season it is the one where you have the opportunity to play on home soil. We’re confident of a very good showing.

“A number of our players have shown terrific development through the course of the season, remembering that at the start of the Sevens circuit we hardly had anyone with experience at this level.”

Newly-crowned Rugby World Cup Sevens champions Wales are in Pool C with New Zealand, USA and Tonga.

Lost a lot of front line players, and got lots of new guys, and a horrible injury toll...all adds up.

Cup Final:

South Africa beat continental rivals Kenya 26-7 to retain their Adelaide Sevens title and stetch their lead at the top of the IRB Sevens World Series table to 28 points with two events to play.

South Africa thoroughly deserved their title, as they first had to overcome New Zealand (in the quarterfinals) and the Fiji (semifinals) before their convincing display against Kenya on the third and final day of the tournament.

In doing so they also exacted revenge for their 14-154 pool loss against the same opposition on Day Two at the Adelaide Oval.

Paul Treu's team went into the half-time break with a vital 14-7 lead after tries by Robert Ebersohn and Vuyo Zangqa. The Kenyan captain Humphrey Kayange replied with a fine converted effort.

After the break, Kenya came out attacking the SA line almost at will, but the Springboks held firm and their defence was simply outstanding.

The second half produced thrilling action, with Kenya looking dangerous every time they were in possession.

But in the end it was the greater experience and desire of the South Africans which saw them ran in two unanswered tries to clinch their second Adelaide title in two years and third Series win overall this season.

Ryno Benjamin scored a fine effort, rounding the Kenyan defence on the outside, to put the match out of reach for Kenya. Renfred Dazel, one of the SA stars, then chased his chip successfully to score his team's fourth try.

South Africa now leads the World Series on 104 points. Two tournament remains before the end of the season, in London and Edinburgh respectively.
Result:
Match 44: Kenya 7-26 South Africa
With thanks to the IRB
