Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper will face-off in Super 14 clash

In a mouth-watering battle of generation next, Kurtley Beale will face Quade Cooper in the influential fly half position when New South Wales Waratahs host arch rivals Queensland Reds in round four of the Super 14.

While Matt Giteau is the best five-eighth playing rugby in the world at the moment (Dan Carter is injured), Beale and Cooper are competing to become his heir apparent in the Australian team.

The contest between Beale and Cooper is reminiscent of the great rivalry between Mark Ella and Paul McLean in the 1980s, but with two significant differences.

McLean was a senior member of the Queensland team when Ella made his debut for NSW in 1979, whereas Beale and Cooper both arrived on the Super rugby scene in 2007.

And while Ella and McLean had contrasting styles, Beale and Cooper are similar players.

No players in Australian rugby have a greater appetite for attacking rugby than Beale and Cooper.

Both had their teething problems in their rookie season. They both carried the burden of great expectations when they were thrown into the crucial decision-making roles, which they did not always fulfil satisfactorily.

For every brilliant pass or sidestep, there always seemed to be a wrong option taken.

A lot of rugby followers seemed to forget they were still kids, but the potential was there.

Beale and Cooper developed well last year in their third season of Super rugby.

Beale steered the Waratahs to the final of the Super 14 series against the Crusaders, while Cooper was a key part of the Reds' revival in the second half of the season.

Cooper got the jump on Beale for national selection, earning three Test caps on the Wallabies' tour of Hong Kong and Europe last November and scoring a match-winning try on debut against Italy in Padua.

Under the tutelage of Wallabies' coach Robbie Deans, Cooper developed his game, providing the Australian team with a second playmaker at inside centre.

Cooper has continued his outstanding form in this year's Super 14, earning a man of the match award in a losing team in the Reds' loss to the Stormers in Cape Town.

Beale was overlooked for the Wallabies' tour of the northern hemisphere because he lacked match fitness after spending too much time on the sidelines with injuries following the Super 14 series. In a way, that was a good thing for Beale as he entered this Super 14 season without as much pressure on him.

Beale has sorted out his game, honed his goal-kicking and has become a match-winner for the undefeated Waratahs.

The two talented fly halfs are now playing with greater maturity and their head-to-head clash will be decisive.

Theirs will be a rivalry to savour for years to come.

However, NSW coach Chris Hickey believes his side could still be another fortnight away from hitting its straps.

Hickey's mantra has been "five or six weeks", the time he believes it will take for his side to click under his new regime.

It was a slogan he repeated after Friday night's 34-16 win over the Highlanders, which continued the Waratahs' unbeaten start to the 2009 Super 14 campaign.

"I think that our game's still developing," Hickey said. "We thought that it might take five or six weeks before we really started to play the way that we'd like to."

From what I've seen, Beale has been the better performer. Cooper is flashy, but the crap he pulls will get him in trouble against stronger opponents. Beale's primary problem has been his goal-kicking for a long time, but he's really sorting that out now.

are you serious cooper's problem is he is so unpredictable sometimes his own teammates dont know what hes doing... yes i admit he has a few errors in his game but composure will come with time... his flashy style is what makes him the player he is sometimes it pays off other times it dosnt... he has certainly outplayed beale this season...

Yeah, Right!!!

How many of the Warratah's tries has Beale set up himself with some exceptional kicking?

About the same number of times as Cooper has fucked up by doing something stupid.

What's that tell you?

Cheetahs = bottom of the table.
Show me proof of him standing up to stronger opposition.

Reds haven't played the Sharks yet. They've played the Stormers and the Bulls

Was close against the Stormers, but they're a sloppy team anyway and got pumped by the bulls who were pathetic last year.

Hey - if Cooper outplays Beale when they play then I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong.

Saying that, I almost wish SportsLegend was here so we could gloat about the Canes beating the Saders - course he'd be like other Saders fans and claim the Canes cheated.

They're the type of players who can create a good play and then completely stuff it it up in the next. Beale has had pretty good form as of late minus his kicking game so I will go with him.

Canes cheated, how...?

There's this git, Justin, in the RugbyHeaven comments claiming the Canes didn't deserve to win and the Crusaders were really the better team:

- Saders were playing 16 men (i.e. Dickinson was biased against them)
- Nonu's try was off a forward pass
- Guildford's try wasn't grounded
- Mathewson's try he was offside

etc etc
