The expansion of Super Rugby is a step closer, after the Executive Committee of SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australian Rugby) held what they called "constructive and robust" discussions in Dubai on Wednesday.
Following the meeting, which centred around the future of SANZAR competition structures for 2011 and beyond, the Southern Hemisphere group said they remain confident that they will be in a position to present a compelling offer to its broadcast partners by the end of June.
At the meeting in Dubai, SANZAR decided to appoint a dedicated project manager to refine the competition structures for Super Rugby and the Tri-Nations.
"This will see an expansion in the format of Super Rugby with geographically based conferences and expanded finals," SANZAR said in a statement.
"The Executive Committee also considered a further report from Argentina and has asked the Working Party to perform further analysis on the viability of Argentina joining the Tri-Nations."
New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew said the expanded Super Rugby tournament could become a reality by 2011.
"The basis of that is that we will put teams into conferences, play more home and away games in terms of local derbies and then play cross-conference games and then have a more in-depth finals series than we currently have," Tew said.
Tew added that "a lot of work remained to be done" before Super Rugby and the Tri-Nations could be expanded.
"These things are all bookended by fixtures you can't move - the June internationals, [South Africa's] Currie Cup, the Tri-Nations, the northern hemisphere tours in November."
Argentina has been seeking entry to an elite tournament but has so far been unsuccessful in its inquiries toward joining Europe's Six Nations or the Tri-Nations.
The Pumas are ranked fourth in the world standings and finished third at the 2007 World Cup, but say they have been held back by their lack of regular top-flight competition.

What SHOULD happen: Bring in a team or two from any of: Argentine, US, Japan, Pacific Islands

What WILL happen: Australia will get a Victoria team, their player pool will be diluted even further, there will be heaps of media talks about who joins the team and who doesn't, they will be bottom of the table (or thereabouts) in their first season...

So the biggest "innovation" is to implement a conference system. Wow. Earth shattering stuff.

What a load of bollocks.

Agreed.

Conference system is so stupid IMO - its just SA's way of ensuring they get a team or two with a chance for a finals berth - whether they're the best teams or not...

Conference system sucks ass especially if they're bunching NZ,SA & Aus teams in their own sections rather then mixing them up. Plus the traveling is going to be HELL if Argentina are included in the comp. I think a pacific team isn't a bad idea since they fairly close to New Zealand and it allows them create more depth of players.

i woulda gone with an argentine team, they're the best southH team not in triNations. logistics is a nightmare but then so's going to SA. failing that I woulda brought in the next best which woulda been a pacific island team

Put in an Argentine team and base them in either Australia or South Africa (probably SA).

Argentina have the most to offer, and any teams that regularly play against them will be that much better for the experience. They have a forward pack that can easily rival the Saffa's in the strength and brawn and a backline that can outclass the ABs on aq good day.

the last time the ABs played them (Jerry was captain) they were lucky to win. In fact in that season the the ABs won everygame except for one game vs SA in Rustenburg. Of all the games that season including that loss to SA, Argentina were by far the hardest, most dynamic and best to watch. They're better known for their forward pack but d4m the now have an awesome backline too.

however if an argentine bid fails then they should have a pacific rim team that can be based anywhere (I'd opt for Japan) but encompasses the pacific rim teams ie, States, Japan, PacificIslands and I'd include some argentinians in that team
