With Stephen Donald finding some very good form, and Cowan and Leonard leading the way at halfback, Piri's now in serious danger of missing out on an ABs spot altogether.

His only saving grace would be the possibility of him still being considered as a 9/10 bench option - of course he'd then be suffering the ignominy of being an "impact" player and little more.

With the Juniors now once again being formed this year, many good players will get a chance to extend themselves into the Pacific Nations Cup, but I don't think anything less than the ABs will be good enough for Weepu...

I think Weepu will have the bench spot, he is more versatile than Leonard and imo is still a better halfback. With Weepu on the bench the 9 & 10 are covered.

My backline for ABs + Bench backs would be:

9. Jimmy Cowan
10. Stephen Donald
11. Sitiveni Sivivatu
12. Ma'a Nonu
13. Richard Kahui
14. Joe Rokocoko
15. Mils Muliaina

20. Piri Weepu
21. Conrad Smith
22. Isaia Toeava

I agree stm - hence the whole problem now. Before Donald was stepping up, Weepu was the form 10 and was doing fine, but now Donald's up to form again he's stepped back into prime contention which drops Weepu back, plus Cowan and Leonard are easily the form halfbacks in the country (I don't like Leonard at all, but you can't deny he's playing very well).

Fortunately Ellis is way off the pace but I wonder if the ABs will go for 2 different HB styles..i.e. runner, passer, kicker...hmm...

Yeah - Cowan's still my top pick, he's leading the Highlanders from the front (so to speak) and doing very well with it.

From what I've seen, my squad atm would be:

9. Cowan
10. Donald
11. Sivivatu
12. Nonu
13. Smith
14. Rokocoko
15. Muliaina

20. Weepu
21 & 22 Kahui / Ellison / Tuitavake

Hard to pick those last outside back covers as they're all playing bloody well. Ellison's in fantastic form and can cover the entire backline. Jane's gotta get back into form if he wants to reclaim the black jersey and Toeava's just not cutting the mustard IMO.

piri's performance in the weekend imo was outstanding. he got into the ruck when needed was at the base of the scrum when alby was a bit slow. what really stood out for me about piri's performance is when he got smashed a couple times, dusted himself off and then got into it again, got smashed tried something else. piri and cowan come from that school of thought wher they never give up or panic when in a losing game.
with ellis and leonard they play great when their teams going forward but when Cheifs had their 40 minute slump leonard went to pieces. piri and cowan do heaps of damageControl and are always mixing up their attacks

Agree with you there Mania - hopefully Henry & co see it the same way...

Let Leonard and Mathewson enjoy some good time with the Juniors.

I'd just have 1 change at 22, Toeava in for Ellison.

I haven't been overly impressed with Toeava, but Ellison really lacks that oomph needed for test play.
