Super 14 Round 11 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Super 14 Round 11   Super 14 Round 11 Icon_minitimeThu Apr 23, 2009 7:27 am

Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper has made three changes to his pack and resisted the temptation to return a fit-again Piri Weepu to starting duty for Saturday night's crunch Super 14 match against the ACT Brumbies in Wellington.

Loose forward Karl Lowe, lock Bryn Evans and prop John Schwalger are all promoted to the starting XV this week, replacing, respectively, Victor Vito, Jason Eaton and Jacob Ellison, all of whom drop to the bench.

Lowe's selection returns the Canes to the dual openside flanker approach which will help their work at the breakdown against the useful Brumbies pack. He and Scott Waldrom have operated successfully together already this season, though neither are what you might call lineout options.

But Evans' surprise selection, ahead of All Black Eaton, may help the cause at lineout time where the tall Hawke's Bay lock is a commanding figure. The Canes have been notably shaky at the set piece through much of their campaign and are anxious to get things back on track there.

But it's Weepu's position on the reserves' bench that may be the biggest surprise of Cooper's selection to face a Brumbies side that has played its way into the playoff picture on the back of three straight wins.

Weepu has been battling a hamstring strain in recent weeks, but took full part in training this week, with many expecting him to be ushered straight back into the lineup, either at No 9 or 10.

But Cooper has left Willie Ripia in the pivot and Alby Mathewson at halfback, and will have the option of injecting Weepu in either of those two spots depending on the requirements of the team.

The Hurricanes lie fourth in the standings, but will regard this penultimate home encounter as a must-win match in the tight race to find the four semifinalists.

Cooper's men have won two on the trot since returning from South Africa and showed signs in last week's 34-11 bonus point victory over the Stormers that they're coming into some form.

Cooper's men have two tricky encounters following this match, at home against he Blues and away to the Chiefs, and will be keen to continue their march up the table against the dangerous Aussies.

The match kicks off at 7.35pm at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.

HURRICANES: 15 Cory Jane, 14 Tamati Ellison, 13 Conrad Smith, 12 Ma'a Nonu, 11 David Smith, 10 Willie Ripia, 9Alby Mathewson; 8 Rodney So'oialo (captain), 7 Scott Waldrom, 6 Karl Lowe, 5 Bryn Evans, 4 Jeremy Thrush, 3 Neemia Tialata, 2 Andrew Hore, 1 John Schwalger. Reserves: 16 Dane Coles, 17 Jacob Ellison, 18 Jason Eaton, 19 Victor Vito, 20 Piri Weepu, 21 Jason Kawau, 22 Zac Guildford.

Not really many tough calls this week - I will not be at all surprised to see a couple of upsets though.

Go the Reds! Big upset on here if they can hang on, which they should from here.
