A dejected Rudi Wulf's All Blacks season appears over before it began - ruled out of Saturday’s test against France with a shoulder injury.

Wulf was left clutching his left shoulder after falling heavily during the All Blacks training run at University Oval in Dunedin today.

The injury seems certain to hand Wellington’s Cory Jane his third test cap, but it is unclear who would take his place on the reserves bench.

Wulf's injury happened about half way through a team run when he jumped to contest a kickoff with Otago provincial player Karne Hesketh.

Both players appeared to gain hold of the ball in mid-air, but Wulf lost his grip and crashed to the ground.

X-rays were being arranged to assess the extent of the damage, but Wulf was already resigned to missing the French test with suspected damage to his AC joint.

The All Blacks replacement options are limited with squad members Conrad Smith and Brendon Leonard both already ruled out through injury.

Junior All Blacks contenders for a late call up could be wings Lelia Masaga, Hosea Gear or Rene Ranger.

Another option would be to bring in a forward for a five-two split in the reserves.

It is a cruel blow for the likeable Wulf after the North Harbour wing battled his way back into the All Blacks after a late start with the Blues in the Super 14 due to a wrist injury.

Wulf broke his wrist during a pre-season match against the Queensland Reds.

Injuries have marked the 25-year-old’s career with a broken neck nearly ending his career in 2005.

Gutted for the guy. Would have liked to see him back in there. Probably Gear will slot onto the bench, but Masaga wouldnt be too bad either.

REALLY hard to say where they're go with this - will they take a specialist wing (which forces a choice between the untested Masaga or the out of form yet more experienced Gear) or the likes of Tuitavake who they already snubbed in favour of McAlister...

I think they'll take Tuitavake all things considered.

Chiefs wing Lelia Masaga has been called into the squad as cover for the crocked Aucklander, though as yet Graham Henry has not made the final call on Saturday's lineup.

I'm glad they went with Masaga and definitely think he should get the start over Jane, he's a specialist wing, so why wouldn't they.

I'm concerned over Masaga being rushed in like this.

I really think he shoud've had some time with the Juniors first.

masaga's a great talent on offense but u gotta ask questions of him on D
In his favour is during the s14 early on he sucked under hi balls then a couple games later he was safe (then a couple games after that he sucked again, then got better), so it shows that he goes away and works on his weaknesses.
however do we really want him in the ABs while he's learning his turn and chase, catching high ball, defensive lines and positioning etc

imo thats too much of a risk at this level and we may not find out bout it till the 3N. france and italy will only reveal his weaknesses if they're lucky, whereas aus and the saffa's will expose every thing he has and doesnt have
