PostSubject: ABs vs France - 2nd Test   ABs vs France - 2nd Test Icon_minitimeTue Jun 16, 2009 4:48 am

Quote :
Conrad Smith and Jerome Kaino have recovered from injuries and been named in the All Blacks to play France in Wellington this Saturday.

Smith has recovered from his hamstring strain and slots into Isaia Toeava's place at centre while Kaino has recovered from his knee injury and comes into the starting line up at blindside flanker, with Kieran Read moving to number eight.

In other changes from last week’s side, Keven Mealamu starts at hooker, with Andrew Hore suffering from rib cartilage damage, while Tanerau Latimer, who made his Test debut from the bench last week, starts in the number seven jersey, with Adam Thomson out injured with a broken bone in his hand.

The two players called into the All Blacks this week, Waikato and Chiefs rake Aled de Malmanche and Canterbury and Crusaders flanker George Whitelock are on the bench.

"The return of Jerome and Conrad from injury will be a boost for the guys,'' All Blacks Coach Graham Henry said.

"The team was disappointed with the way they played in last weekend’s loss to France and are looking forward to making big improvements this week.''

The team is:

1. Tony Woodcock
2. Keven Mealamu
3. Neemia Tialata
4. Brad Thorn
5. Isaac Ross
6. Jerome Kaino
7. Tanerau Latimer
8. Kieran Read
9. Jimmy Cowan
10. Stephen Donald
11. Josevata Rokocoko
12. Ma’a Nonu
13. Conrad Smith
14. Cory Jane
15. Mils Muliaina – captain

Reserves:

16. Aled de Malmanche
17. John Afoa
18. Bryn Evans
19. George Whitelock
20. Piri Weepu
21. Luke McAlister
22. Isaia Toeava

Harsh call dropping Messam completely, thought he would've been an ideal bench player, especially with Whitelock being as green as they come, and Read hardly performing any better. Cowan given a lifeline and Weepu must feel jibbed; similarly with Tialata - though Afoa hardly set the game alight like Piri did. Not surprised to see Donald given another chance as well. Good to see Jane persisted with - certainly deserves it, Masaga must be gutted though - he should be sent back to the Juniors to play for them really.

Yea I agree, dropping Messam altogether is hard to understand.

Fair enough if it was So'oialo and McCaw coming back. And both Messam and Read were equally as bad as each other so I can even go along with him dropping to the bench maybe. But to pick Whitelock ahead of him??

I cant believe that. Is Messam injured or something?

The backline seems to look a lot stronger with Conrad back, disappointing to see Messam dropped, I would of preferred they got rid of Read if anyone. Still got Donald there, which is no surprise even though I want him out!

Yea Tialata had a rubbish season, but we don't have too many decent options for props. we need Carl Hayman back!!

At least he's versatile enough to cover both sides.

Their obsession with Read and the promotion of Whitelock ahead of Messam is harder to fathom.

If Tialata is versatile he can bench then. They need a tougher tighthead to stand up to the big French forwards, Hayman could definitely do that

The bench is exactly where he would be IF Hayman was available, which he obviously isnt.

Besides, Mike Cron is the best scrum coach in the world bar none, if Tialata is starting, it'll be on his say so.

Yea just saying how we would be much better if Hendo's wish came true. Coaches identified him and Messam as players who didn't play as well as they could have so guess he was alot luckier because he will be getting another chance

As I said though - Afoa is complete crap. The three (arguably) best props in NZ are all specialist loosehead props (Tony Woodcock, Wyatt Crockett, Jamie Mackintosh) which leaves a chasm at tighthead.

Hayman back would be a godsend.

Pretty sure this season is his last for Newcastle. Hopefully the NZRU gets him back home after that and he's available for the 2010 end of year tour.

Sucks that tighthead is one of our real weaknesses even with everyone health when it is such a key position

The canes were interested in trying to pull him via Taranaki - damn that front row would be nice...Tialata/Hore/Hayman Smile

Yea thats handy alright. Hayman in would give the Hurricanes pack a huge boost.

Rock solid set pieces and a hard nosed tight five is something they've traditionally lacked but Hayman would be almost as influential for the Canes as Carter would've been for the Blues.

Yeah - Canes really need to get rid of Schwalger though. At least Tialata runs hot and cold - and can be freaking impressive when he's on song...Schwalger gets luke-warm at best. Jacob Ellison is a much better prospect.

You know it does highlight our dependance on a few key individuals tho doesnt it?

Here we are hoping that Hayman comes back because we all know what a massive difference he would make, despite being only 1 guy out of 22. And last week already proved how much we missed McCaw and co.

Our first choice starting XV might look something like the below (assuming Hayman comes back), but the guys in bold would be the heart and soul of the team. With all of them in, we're world beaters but start to take any of them out and the look of the team tapers out dramatically.

15-Muliaina
14-Rockocoko
13-Smith
12-Nonu
11-Sivivatu
10-Carter
9-Cowan
8-So'oialo
7-McCaw
6-Kaino
5-Williams
4-Thorn
3-Hayman
2-Hore
1-Woodcock

I hear ya...SO many people on the Stuff.co.nz comments pages have been suggesting Mils to centre and Jane to fullback (nice that he's getting kudos though) - some people have VERY short memories...

Although to be fair, Mils at centre in itself wasn't really the problem - MacDonald at fullback was. he's a good offensive player, but he is always found out at Fullback when push comes to shove on the tight defensive work...

oh and Wayne Barnes fucked us over Very Happy

A Quote From Ali Williams

"And you've got to look at the ref. Seventeen unawarded penalties, that's bullshit."
